Fran Drescher Says Her Nanny Reboot with Cardi B Isn't Actually Happening

The flashy girl from Flushing may be coming back to television soon — but sadly, she won’t be played by rapper Cardi B.

On Wednesday, actress Fran Drescher stopped by SiriusXM’s The Michael Yo Show where she talked about her long-rumored reboot of The Nanny, the CBS sitcom that catapulted the 61-year-old actress to fame back in the ’90s.

Drescher has openly campaigned to get Cardi to play the role, in a reboot that would cast Drescher as her mother. But as she told comedian Michael Yo, that request has fallen on deaf ears.

“Truth be told, I’m not developing that as a television series right now,” Drescher admitted. “I’ve talked to her representation.”

Instead, Drescher said she’s collaborating with writer/producer Peter Marc Jacobson (her gay ex-husband) and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator Rachel Bloom on “something that I think The Nanny fans are going to be very excited about. Something Nanny related.”

Still, the Cardi premise lingers in Drescher’s mind.

“In my head, I always thought that for a television series it might be more fun rather than where are we 20 years later, to actually do the show with a whole new cast and get like a Cardi B to play the Nanny and get like an Obama type to play Mr. Sheffield. Maybe I could be Cardi B’s mother Sylvia, and just mix it up!” Drescher added.

Cardi was a perfect choice for Drescher to give the show the boost it needed.

“I actually think she’s funny. I think she’s beautiful and she has a funny voice. She’s from New York. She’s got the style of a star and you can’t buy that. There are just some people like JLo and Cher and Diana Ross. It’s just a given,” said Drescher. “She and I on social media, on Instagram and stuff, she’s often putting us together. My picture, her picture. She’s very influenced by the style of myself and the nanny from back in the day and it’s very flattering to me.”

The Nanny premiered on CBS in 1993 and ran for six seasons before its finale in 1999. The show followed Drescher as Fran Fine, a failed bridal shop worker turned makeup saleswoman from Flushing, Queens, who finds herself the nanny to British Broadway producer and millionaire Maxwell Sheffield’s three children.

Now celebrating The Nanny‘s 25th anniversary, Drescher has said the sitcom still has a sea of loyal fans. “People really love that show,” she told PeopleTV in October. “It’s unreal.”

Unfortunately, Drescher said at the time that there’s been little interest from networks about the potential for a new series.

“I’m totally down with doing [a revival],” she said. “I don’t know what is going on with some of these networks out there because they do not seem to be hip to the fact that there’s an obsession amongst millennials for the show and moi!”

The Michael Yo Show hosted by SiriusXM’s Michael Yo airs daily at 2:00 pm ET on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio (Ch. 105).
