Former EastEnders star David Witts struggled with fan attention

Ex-EastEnders star David Witts has opened up about his time on the soap, admitting that he struggled with all the fan attention that came with the role.

The actor played character Joey Branning between 2012 and 2013, revealing that he found the experience of fans recognising him “weird”.

EastEnders, when I think back on it, feels like a dream,” he told The Sun. “It just doesn’t seem like real life.

“I can leave here and just get on a tube and go home and my life isn’t really impacted, whereas on EastEnders it just takes over your whole life.

“You can’t go anywhere without people rushing up to you and wanting to take pictures and stuff and that’s just so strange. It will never not be weird.”

Witts, who’s now appearing in London’s West End in the musical Wicked, continued: “When I look back on it it was a really short amount of time, but it felt like I was in it for ages.

“I never anticipated doing it for very long and also I was so young. I was 21 years old and at that age I wanted to do so many different things. Maybe had I got that opportunity at a different age, my time would have been slightly different.

“When you’re so young and you go and do a show like that – I was enjoying the success but I was just chomping at the bit to do anything.”

So would he ever return to the soap? “The thing is, I think everyone’s dead who I would come into contact with,” he said. “I think anyway – I haven’t seen it in a long time.

“I don’t think there would be a reason to go back there, unless he left something behind, left a jacket that he likes and just needs to pop in and pick it up.

However, he suggested he could come back if bosses could work out a way, adding: “2018 was my year of surrender, to go with what the universe was telling me.

“When somebody calls me up and asks me to audition for something, OK, seems like that’s what I should be auditioning for. I can’t imagine they will call. Like he could happen to be related to somebody else or whatever, but they have not asked.”
