Ex-CIA Deputy Director David S. Cohen Made a Cameo on Game of Thrones: 'Way to Blow My Cover'

Move over, Ed Sheeran — there’s another Game of Thrones cameo that’s got everyone talking.

On Sunday’s episode of the HBO series, former deputy director of the CIA David S. Cohen made a surprise appearance as an unnamed resident of Winterfell. In the short scene, he was served a bowl of hot soup from Ser Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) as the North prepared to go to war against the Night King and his army of the dead.

The agency revealed the cameo by tweeting a photo of Cohen in character: “A perk of working for CIA is world travel. Apparently that sometimes extends to other realms… ‘Little birds,’ be on the lookout for a former deputy director of ours wandering through #Westeros in tonight’s episode of #GameOfThrones.”

“Way to blow my cover!” Cohen joked in response.

Cohen’s cameo was first reported by Playboy correspondent Alex Thomas last week.

“You seem to have good sources in Winterfell,” Cohen tweeted in response to the scoop, adding: “As Arya might say, ‘A man has no name.’ ”

Cohen served as deputy director of the CIA from 2015-2017 under President Barack Obama. So how exactly did he snag 15 seconds of airtime in the last season of HBO’s biggest show?

According to Thomas, Cohen is actually married to co-creator David Benioff’s sister Suzy Friedman. In the words of Jaime Lannister, the things we do for love!

Last week, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney shocked fans by appearing as a man whose eye was gouged out.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays (9 p.m. ET) on HBO.
