Evelyn loses her family in Corrie after making a devastating confession

Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) returned to Coronation Street tonight with her daughter Cassie (Claire Sweeney) in tow.

They have been away from Weatherfield because Cassie has been attending a rehab clinic. The mother and daughter agreed that would be the best thing to do after Cassie found out that Evelyn is living with Tyrone (Alan Halsall) and wanted the chance to create a relationship with him.

Evelyn let the love she has for her daughter get in the way tonight as she agreed to let Cassie go out and get a coffee, thinking that she’d be fine as she’s been clean for weeks.

It turned out to be a huge lie, as Cassie headed to Weatherfield and arrived at the Bistro where Hope (Isabella Flanagan) and Ruby (now played by Billie Naylor) were performing in the Little Big Shotz show.

Cassie sat at the back and watched as Tyrone recorded his children and when the performance ended, she made her way over to see them.

The newcomer got Tyrone alone and went to reveal the truth in a calm way, but Evelyn then arrived and tried to hurry Cassie away.

Cassie blurted out that she’s Tyrone’s mum and in the aftermath, Evelyn was furious at her daughter for creating such a huge mess.

At home, Tyrone learnt that Evelyn had known about Cassie’s whereabouts for the best part of a year, meaning she watched him marry Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) last Christmas, fully aware that his mum could’ve witnessed the entire thing as well.

Poor Evelyn argued that she thought she was making the right choices, while Cassie sat beside her son and tried to convince him that Evelyn was a terrible person.

As the episode drew to a close, Tyrone started to believe that Evelyn was just that. He was so hurt and upset and told Evelyn to leave, asserting that his family will consist of him, Fiz, Hope and Ruby from now on.

‘There’s a lot of anger there,’ Claire Sweeney said. ‘And it’s not just about Tyrone, it goes back to childhood. There is a scene coming up where she talks to Tyrone about why she is the way she is and about her childhood and about her relationship with her mum, who was very cold, never hugged her, never told her she loved her.

‘It was quite a cold relationship really, she even kicked her out when she was a teenager. And so there’s a lot of resentment. You know, fundamentally she does love Evelyn, she’s her mum after all but she finds it hard to forgive the things she’s done to her as a teenager growing up then ultimately even as an adult, she’s she’s continued to lie about about her and she abandoned Cassie’s baby on the steps of a police station.

‘Cassie believes they could have worked something out to keep Tyrone in the family. And then Evelyn has gone back and reaped all the benefits of being a grandma without Cassie.’
