Escape to the Chateau is unlike any other home DIY series with couple Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree uprooting their lives in the UK with their children to move into a dilapidated 19th century French chateau. Over the past six years, Channel 4 viewers have seen how they have managed to transform the historic building into a beautiful home and given some handy tips along the way. It’s nearly time to say goodbye now as Dick and Angel announced the show’s end earlier this year.

Why is Escape to the Chateau ending?

Escape to the Chateau is finishing after nine seasons and six years on Channel 4, refurbishing the Château de la Motte-Husson in the small market town of Martigné-sur-Mayenn.

There are just a couple more episodes left to air with the penultimate instalment airing this evening, Sunday, December 11, at 8pm on Channel 4.

The news came out in September that Dick and Angel wanted to leave the series behind, much to the disappointment of fans.

They shared a heartfelt message to try and let their followers down gently with the sad news.

In a joint statement, they wrote: “Our decision to buy a Chateau with no water, electricity, heating or sewage has taken us on the adventure of a lifetime and we could never have imagined what would unfold.

“The good, the bad and the ugly… We have cherished every second and love that we have a visual record to show Arthur and Dorothy when they’re older.”

Delving further into the reason behind the cancellation, Dick and Angel explained on Radio Times’ View From My Sofa podcast that it was because of their children.

Dick said: “[They’re] turning nine and 10 – they’ve had an innocence and joy in what we’ve done.

“We’ve got lots of things we still intend to do, but we want to protect the family part of it.”

Angel agreed with her husband, adding: “Absolutely. Finish on a high!”

But it’s not all doom and gloom as the famous duo won’t be off our screens for very long.

Dick and Angel are going to be returning for their own spin-off travel series in the New Year.

The show, entitled Escape to the Chateau: Secret France, will follow the couple on their adventures around the country that they’ve made their home.

Fans will no longer see Dick and Angel’s children with probably far fewer moments showing off their stunning chateau.

As of yet, an official release date hasn’t been announced for the new series but it may not premiere until later on in the year when Escape to the Chateau usually airs.

Nevertheless, there is still more to look forward to when it comes to the original Channel 4 series.

In the next episode, Dick and Angel are making preparations for Christmas, as well as for a larger-than-usual wedding.

The synopsis for tonight’s episode reads: “Dick and Angel create a conservatory-style winter garden room.

“Meanwhile, the chateau is busy hosting its biggest wedding ever, so there is also lots of organisation to do.

“Dick and Angel organise a huge Christmas party for all their family and friends, and it’s time to sort out the invites – which involve fudge, sparkles and a tin can.”

Escape to the Chateau continues tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.
