Emotional Casualty scenes tonight as they battle to save an ill baby

You’ll need tissues to hand because it’s a real tear-jerker of a Casualty episode tonight, as Rash (Neet Mohan) and the rest of the team try to save a desperately ill baby and support her mother in hugely emotional scenes. Meanwhile Ethan (George Rainsford) gets a visit from an old university friend whose daughter is seriously ill with cystic fibrosis – and Ethan may be their final hope.

It’s not the happiest of days for a new F1 to start, although new doctor Mason Reid (Victor Oshin) reckons he’s prepared for anything. But are his colleagues prepared for Mason? And Charlie (Derek Thompson) goes to work leaving Duffy (Cathy Shipton) at home – how will she cope? Here are all the spoilers to look out for.

Rash plans to delay his return to work to help his dad sort out his late mum’s belongings. He goes to the ED to tell Dylan (William Beck) in person, and while he’s there a woman with a very ill baby asks for his help. Rash can’t help but be drawn into what becomes a terribly sad case.

New F1 Mason arrives in the ED full of confidence and raring to go. Rash reassures him that it’s natural and understandable if he feels out of his depth on his first shift. ‘Why would I feel out of my depth?’ is Mason’s reply – and when he’s asked to do something that he feels may be beneath him, he proves that he’s not ready to be a team player.

The team all rally around to try to support Holly, the sick baby’s mother, as she faces her child’s heartbreaking diagnosis. When Rash’s father turns up at the hospital in a distressed state, Rash has to leave Holly in the care of Mason. How will the new F1 cope?

Ethan is having horrific flashbacks and nightmares about the explosion in the market and is trying to come to terms with the experience. He’s about to go home when an old university friend, Theo (Jim Sturgeon), brings his daughter Effie to Holby. Effie is seriously ill and Theo is hoping Ethan can help.

Effie confides in Ethan that she’s more ill than her father realises and she doesn’t think there’s anything Ethan can do for her. Despite her very grave physical condition she’s a spirited person who’s full of life – and Ethan wonders whether there’s something he can do to help her after all.

Duffy spends the day at home while Charlie goes to work. But when he finds five missed calls from Duffy at the end of his shift, Charlie’s worried. What’s been happening to Duffy while he was away?
