Emmerdale fans break down in tears over 'heartbreaking' scenes as Chas and Paddy's daughter Grace dies shortly after birth

The heartbreaking scenes left viewers in pieces after baby Grace was welcomed by Paddy and Chas.

Fans couldn't contain themselves as the heart-wrenching scenes unravelled, taking to Twitter to air their feelings.

One wrote: "I'm not really a baby person but Emmerdale is gonna ruin me on this episode."

While another said that: "Emmerdale has been on 3 minutes and I’m crying my eyes out."

Another acknowledged what an important storyline it was and congratulated the producers for their choice: "I’m glad they have covered it though to show that all the perfect healthy children you see born with pictures on Facebook isn’t always the reality for some people."

While others were quick to praise the "excellent acting" of actors Dominic Brunt and Lucy Pargeter.

As spoilers for the ITV soap previously revealed, Paddy and Chas’s joy at welcoming their newborn is short-lived as Grace has little chance of survival outside the womb.

When pub landlady Chas went for her 20-week scan she was told her daughter was suffering from the condition bilateral renal agenesis – meaning the baby has no kidneys and underdeveloped lungs.

While she was originally offered the chance to terminate the pregnancy, Chas decided to take the pregnancy to full-term, giving birth to baby Grace with vet boyfriend Paddy by her side.

In emotional scenes, Paddy tells Chas that baby Grace is ‘alive’ after the difficult labour.

Briefly smiling at one another, Chas then turns her attention to the clock facing her hospital bed, knowing that time with their newborn daughter is brief.

In a departure to its usual soap style, a special flash-forward episode will show Paddy and Chas imagine what their life would be like as their daughter grows up.

Speaking to the Metro about the episode, actress Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas, explained, “It’s a fantasy flash forward.

“So it’s Grace when she has just been born at one, at four, then at 12. It’s the kind of things they would have done with her if she’d have still been around – it’s in their heads in the delivery room after she’s just been born.

“They’re thinking about all of the things that they won’t get to do with her – it was traumatic but it was beautiful filming it.”

Elsewhere among the Dales, soap favourites Aaron Dingle and Robert Sugden will tie the knot outside the village hall.

But it’s not a soap wedding without a spanner in the works – will RobRon live happily ever after, or will something halt the happy couple?

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
