Emmerdale was the first of the first of the soaps to air on ITV1 and the opening music was played on the piano which it isn’t usually.
The theme usually features a string orchestra and the piano can be heard playing quietly in the background.
In the accompanying scenes, the usual car can be seen driving through the woods before there are shots from inside a house.
A grandfather clock can be seen standing in the hallway where there are clothes and shoes scattered across the floor and someone can be seen running upstairs.
The camera pans to the living room where a fire can be seen roaring away as a small dog runs out.
There is then a scene where people can be seen sitting in the local pub before the vehicle drives through the village.
The Coronation Street theme had also been given a makeover and was played on the piano too.
Again, the music was the same but it had been given a jazzy feel as the accompanying scenes featured a rainy Manchester, where the soap is based.
Unidentified people can be seen walking through the fictional town of Weatherfield as the camera pans to the Rovers Return Inn pub sign.
However, viewers were left confused after hearing the tune and took to Twitter to voice their concern that the music had changed forever.
One Emmerdale viewer wrote: “The new Emmerdale music sounds like music for a funeral!!! All your best bits in your life in a music package!!! You may as well change program name back to Emmerdale farm due to the c**p 1970’s style of music!!! Sort it out who ever changed it!!! Clowns!! #Emmerdale”
Another Emmerdale and Coronation Street fan shared: “Thought there was something wrong with the sound on my TV when I heard the #Emmerdale and #Corrie #intro but apparently there's a reason for it and all will be revealed tomorrow.”
One other viewer tweeted: “I'm sorry,but has @ITV managed to bring #Liberace back to life,with all these God awful piano theme, opening credits,on the #soaps tonight!! Just horrible!! Get back in Ur casket please #Liberace #Emmerdale #corrie #piano #WhatTheF**kitv.”
And another wrote: “Why did they change the Corrie AND emmerdale music tonight to slow piano music CHANGE IT BACK #Corrie #emmerdale.”
Someone else posted: “What the b**ody hell is going on with the Emmerdale theme tune? Asking for a mate #emmerdale.”
And one other soap fan asked: “Piano theme tunes this evening??? Any clues? Or is it just a ploy to get #Emmerdale and #corrie trending???”
However, there is a secret reason for the changed theme tune and ITV will be revealing all tomorrow when they will change back.
And some people believe they know what it is, with one person posting online: “I think it's to do with Elton John playing piano and the John Lewis Christmas ad being aired on ITV tomorrow."
Another wrote: “Googled it…..all day the theme tunes have been by piano…..John Lewis advert tomorrow.”
And someone else posted: “They've done it all day, apparently it's to do with the launch of the new #johnlewis advert. I've heard it's Elton John playing the piano.. we are meant to find out tomorrow at 9.15pm.”
