Elton John donates £5k to Barbara Windsor's husband as he runs London Marathon with soap stars to raise cash for Alzheimer's charity

Dame Barbara, 81, was diagnosed with the condition in 2014 and has seen her condition deteriorate over the past five years.

Her husband Scott, 56, has teamed up with with stars Adam Woodyatt, Jake Wood, Emma Barton, Natalie Cassidy, Kellie Shirley, Tanya Franks, Jamie Borthwick and Jane Slaughter to form Barbara's Revolutionaries and they've got the backing of legendary musician Elton.

On the team's Virgin Money Giving page, Scott shared a sweet message from Elton and his family.

It reads: "It's such a fantastic cause that you are running the London Marathon for, Scott. We wish you and the team the very best of luck! Love Elton, David, Zachary and Elijah xx"

The generous pledge takes the total raised so far past £47,000 of the £100,000 target.

Just weeks ago Scott told The Sunday Mirror his wife tells him every night "I'm sorry about this" as he cares for her.

He said: "She thanks me for looking after her. I say to her, ‘You don’t have to thank me.’ ”

Scott added how the actress can no longer be left alone and needs "constant care".

He explained: "She can’t look after herself but then we still sit and have dinner and watch TV and have normal conversations.

“There are also some funny moments where we laugh."

But Barbara can't help apologising to her husband of 18 years for being unwell, and the couple take things one day at a time.

Scott said: "We just take things day by day. I haven’t spoken to Barbara – about the end of her life.

“There is a lot of Barbara that is still very much present, and I think you have to be very sensitive when you talk to people who are actually living with the illness."

Scott is doing his best to look after himself too, and is unashamed to admit he attends regular therapy sessions.

He explained: “That helps me, it stops me going insane. I go every couple of weeks."

Indeed, Scott admits he hates feeling "helpless" when Barbara is having one of her bad days with the condition.

He said: "I hate seeing her when she is confused and upset. You want to reach inside and make it all right but the heartbreaking thing is you can't."
