EastEnders shock and horror over Rainie Cross, Jack Branning and Max Branning's messy love triangle

EastEnders‘ Rainie Cross is going to have some serious explaining to do to husband Max Branning after a shocking cliffhanger in Thursday night’s (September 13) episode.

The penultimate episode of the week started off promising enough for Rainie (Tanya Franks) as she planned to go for drinks with Max (Jake Wood), since the two were finally on solid ground.

But after noticing that brother-in-law Jack (Scott Maslen) was down in the dumps, Rainie felt guilty and invited him to tag along — and actually ended up leaving the two brothers to talk when she sensed Jack needed to get a few things off his chest.

She couldn’t have have made a bigger mistake because as the drinks flowed, it was actually Max who confessed to Jack that his entire marriage to Rainie was a total sham to get custody of baby Abi.

“I’m only doing it get Abi, and then I’m going to pay her off,” he blurted out. “It’s all codswallop. I don’t love her anymore than Mel loved you.”

When Rainie returned and realised that their secret had been exposed, she was shocked and devastated, especially since it’d seemed like Max was starting to develop genuine feelings for her recently.

“We’re completing a business transaction,” she warned him. “Do your part!”

As a conflicted Max stumbled off through Albert Square after blowing his big street, he ran across his former flame Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), who gave him some surprisingly sage advice about his marriage.

“I know you, Max,” Stacey assured him. “You’ve got a good thing there… Don’t mess it up, Max.”

Unfortunately for Max, he might’ve truly blown it because at that very moment, Jack was consoling a heartbroken Rainie… and she leaned in for a kiss. Although he resisted at first, eventually Jack gave in and the two were locked in passion.

“This won’t help,” Jack insisted, with Rainie telling him: “No, but it’ll make us feel better for now.”

And another messy EastEnders love triangle was born! Must… look… away! Can’t… look… away!

Also in Thursday’s episode, gang member Bruno’s mum Sophie once again turned up at Carmel Kazemi’s doorstep, this time claiming that she was being targeted by the gang after snitching on them to police.

The gang soon arrived to threaten Sophie, but Martin and Kush were able to run them off. Much to their shock, Carmel insisted that Sophie should stay with them for her own safety.

Keanu Taylor continued trying to woo Sharon Mitchell as well, but is it only a matter a time before they’re caught out after their lucky escape earlier this week?

Plus, the police released Dylan without charge in their investigation into the ‘Who Shot Stuart’ mystery, leaving the Carters to doubt each other’s innocence. Mick set up a secret meeting with Dylan, but was interrupted by someone who thanked him for shooting Stuart.

“So you think I done it, huh? You think I tried to kill a man,” Mick ranted. “If you say that about me or my family again, I’ll throw you out the window!”

Just then, the investigators arrived at the Vic to arrest Mick for the attempted murder of Stuart Highway…

EastEnders continues at 8pm on Friday on BBC One.
