EastEnders fans praise Barbara Windsor's 'best-ever performance'

EastEnders re-aired the iconic showdown between Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) and Pat Butcher (Pam St Clement) tonight, and fans were praising it as one the actress’ ‘best ever’ performances.

During the episode, Peggy learned that her husband Frank (Mike Reid) had been planning to run away with her best friend, Pat. Pat and Frank had previously been married, but had re-ignited their love and started an affair,

In classic Albert Square fashion, it all came out after Frank rushed after Peggy’s son Phil (Steve McFadden), who he thought had stolen a note he had written to Peggy, confessing to the affair.

But Frank was barking up the wrong tree, as the note had accidentally been collected by Queen Vic cleaner Little Mo Slater (Kacey Ainsworth), who gave it back to Peggy, since it was addressed to her.

Set on Bonfire Night, Peggy then announced to the entire, packed pub that she had an announcement to make, before reading the entire contents of the letter aloud and slapping both Frank and Pat for maximum effect.

And for the viewers at home, this was a great trip down memory lane, and a potent reminded for the powers Dame Barbara was in control of as an actress.

One fan deemed it ‘[her] greatest every performance,’ and it was a comment that many others seemed to agree with.

Another viewer said: ‘This is EastEnders at its best. Golden era.’

‘Loving these classic EastEnders episodes,’ another wrote. ‘Wonderful to see Barbara Windsor in action.’

Did anyone else get a massive shiver upon re-hearing the iconic: ‘hope you all enjoyed the fireworks…goodnight!’

This is, however, the last trip down memory lane we’ll be taking down Albert Square…for the time being.

The iconic soap will return to our screens with new episodes on Monday 7 September, and we’re already counting down the days.
