EastEnders fans are convinced Stacey Fowler and Max Branning will hook up again after he comforts her following row

Despite Phil Mitchell delivering a baby and Alfie getting shoved down the stairs, all Twitter could talk about last night was the possibility that Stacey and Max could be back on. Again.

The former lovers have managed to keep it in their pants so far while they both try and enjoy Christmases with their other halves.

Stacey is married to Martin Fowler and Max is trying to make it work with former-crack addict Rainie in an attempt to get custody of his granddaughter, Abi.

But after he found Stacey sobbing in the chilly Christmas night air, Max couldn't resist pulling his ex-love in a for a hug.

Fans of the show rushed to Twitter to comment on the situation.

One wrote: "Wouldn’t be Christmas without these 2 sniffing around each other."

Another agreed writing: "Can Max and Stacey get married and die together bc it’s not every year #EastEnders."

Some fans chose to see the romance with one writing: "Max Branning and Stacey Slater love one another. These are the facts. Stacey doesn’t love Martin like she does Max and Max definitely doesn’t love Rainie in the way he loves Stacey. Max and Stacey are endgame."

Finding his former lover crying in the Square, Max goes over to give Stacey a hug.

Pulling her in close, the brunette beauty rests her head on his shoulder and laments why "everything has to go wrong".

Offering her a comforting "Stace, Stace", Max watches her go and the two share a moment of holding hands.

As Stacey gets to the front door she looks over her shoulder and gives Max a longing look.

Ahead of his return back in April, actor Jake Wood hinted that a reconciliation between Stacey and Max would never be 'off the table'.

He said: "Well, as we saw at Christmas [2017], he declared his love for her, I think those feelings are still there, I think they’ll always be there.

"They’ve got a real history, Max and Stacey and I think deep down he loves her but obviously he’s had to put all those feelings to one side because of Martin.

"Ultimately he wants her to be happy, so for now all those feelings are put to one side but I’m sure they will resurface again at some point."

Walford was full of drama for the festive season as Kat found out that Alfie was actually the father of her cousin Hayley's baby.

Jean struggled to keep the secret from her daughter Stacey, which lead to her lying and pretending Ian was giving her grief.

After getting confronted by the feisty brunette, Jean revealed she was in fact dating the Beale and really liked him.

The episode ended with a Alfie getting pushed down the stairs by Hayley as his wife Kat looked on.
