Whitney Dean (played by Shona McGarty) has been taken under the wing of Terry ‘Rocky’ Cant (Brian Conley) in EastEnders. Sonia Fowler’s (Natalie Cassidy) dad spotted the market trader’s singing talent and has been trying to help Whitney find a path into show business. However, could there be a heartbreaking reason behind his eagerness to support the Walford resident?

Whitney was introduced to BBC soap viewers in 2008 as Bianca Jackson’s (Patsy Palmer) adoptive daughter.

Bianca was in a relationship with Whitney’s dad Nathan Dean and brought the young girl up as her own when he died in a traffic accident in 2002.

The market trader had a strained relationship with her mum Debra Dean (Ruth Gemmell) who abandoned her daughter when she was a baby.

Debra left Whitney with her ex-husband Nathan and showed little interest in her when they reunited years later.

Could Debra have lied about Whitney’s paternity and pretended Nathan was her father?

The mum had no desire to raise her daughter and may have trusted her husband to take care of Whitney more than her biological father.

Meanwhile, little is known about Rocky’s past other than the fact he abandoned Carol Branning (Lindsey Coulson) when Sonia was a child.

Could he have secretly fathered Whitney and is now desperately trying to make up for lost time?

In Tuesday’s EastEnders, Rocky continued with his quest to help Whitney launch her singing career.

Rocky organised a meeting with music agent Jen (Kate Robbins) but Whitney was a little sceptical.

However, over a drink at Walford East, the market trader was thrilled when Jen mentioned a competition she could enter.

Before the music manager arrived, Whitney grilled Rocky on his romance with Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth).

“What’s the plan with Kathy?” Whitney asked and he replied: “Like I said, it’s finito, it’s done.”

“But why? It can’t be that bad just get her a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates and she’ll have you back in a heartbreak,” Whitney remarked.

“Sounds to me like she’s more trouble than she’s worth,” Jen said. “Did I hear that right? You’re single again.”

“I’m running a singing competition, the top prize is a day in a recording studio and £10,000,” Jen continued.

“Sorry, £10,000?” Whitney quipped and Rocky remarked: “You never said that. Well, surely you’re not going to say no now.”

“Let’s do it,” the market trader agreed before Jen warned: “It’s only open for professionals, would you be able to get a paid performance in time to qualify?”

“Of course she will I’m her manager,” Rocky said. “Leave it to me.”

Determined to find Whitney a paid gig, Rocky asked Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) for a favour.

The Queen Vic landlord was initially hesitant but changed his mind when Rocky suggested hosting a charity event.

Could Rocky’s eagerness to help Whitney be linked to her paternity?

EastEnders continues on BBC One on Thursday at 7.35pm.
