Dwayne Johnson has done it all in the last few years — driven fast cars, battle a giant crocodile, tolerated Kevin Hart — but one dream role has eluded him.
But now, he’s gotten it. Deadline reports Johnson will play Hawaiian king Kamehameha in a biopic that is being compared to “Braveheart.” Robert Zemeckis is set to direct a script by Randall Wallace.
Kamehameha is the iconic king who was the first to unite the Hawaiian islands, fulfilling a prophecy that followed him from birth. Through his leadership, Hawaiian islanders gained leverage in trading with foreign ships from Europe.
Johnson, who is of Polynesian decent, has been hoping to make a movie about Kamehameha for nearly two decades.
According to Deadline, Johnson finally decided to go ahead with the project while filming last year’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” on Hawaii. The actor is now in a position to make any movie he wants, under his terms. The icing on the cake: A Hawaiian priest blessed the project and Johnson.
