What is maskne?
For almost the entire year, millions of people in the country have had to wear masks on a regular basis. What some may not know is that masks can contribute to acne. Many people have dubbed it as “maskne,” and breakouts occur when there is friction from the fabric.
Health informs that wearing a mask for extended periods of time will irritate the skin and cause inflammation. It also can lead to a buildup of sweat and oil. Sweat, oil, and dirt are known to cause pimples, and how they promote breakouts is by clogging pores. The cheeks, nose, and chin are more likely to develop acne since they are the areas that get covered by masks.
The warm and humid weather has not helped many people in their fight against maskne. Those with acne-prone skin may have a tough time trying to clear their skin while they stay safe.
Dr. Pimple Popper’s plan to fight maskne
With the widespread problem of maskne, Dr. Pimple Popper is here to help. In an exclusive with Page Six, she offers viewers five ways to combat it. It is important for people to do what they can to reduce and prevent breakouts.
Her first tip is to minimize the use of makeup on the bottom half of the face. Dr. Lee explains that the products will clog pores, especially when trapped beneath a mask. The next advice she gives is to clean masks daily or wear a new, clean one each day. It is necessary to get the sweat out of the fabric before putting it back over the skin.
Dr. Lee’s third tip to minimizing is to use a cotton mask. Cotton is an effective material that gets rid of the extra moisture from the skin. The mask creates additional heat, which makes it humid underneath. Another way to combat maskne is by using a salicylic acid spray on the mask. Salicylic acid is a great way to exfoliate the skin, and all people need to do is spray the inside of the mask and wait for it to dry.
Her final tip is to get a pimple patch in the event a pimple does form. They are small bandages that people can easily apply to the pimple. The patches stop the mask from rubbing the acne.
Dr. Lee’s other advice to return to normal skin includes using an acne wipe that contains either alpha or beta hydroxy acid. A great retinol treatment is perfect for everyday skincare. As annoying as maskne is, the condition is easily treatable.
