Doctor Who's move to Sunday nights was "very much" a decision made by BBC "high-ups"

It’s all change for Doctor Who when the series returns to BBC One on October 7: new Doctor, new companions, new monsters… and a new slot.

The sci-fi will be departing its traditional Saturday night slot for the first time since the series was revived in 2005, moving to Sunday evenings.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at the launch for the new series, Doctor Who‘s executive producer Matt Strevens explained that he and showrunner Chris Chibnall were open to changing the show’s slot, but that it was “high-ups” at the BBC who plumped for Sundays.

“We were talking about how you refresh it, how you change it up… and one of the things was, ‘Let’s put everything on the table,’ and that includes the night it goes out,” Strevens told us.

“But it was very much a decision taken by the upper echelons of the BBC and the schedulers – ‘the high-ups’ as we call them! But when they approached us – Chris and I – and said they’d like to maybe move it to Sunday night, we thought that was an absolutely brilliant idea.”

In an earlier statement, Chibnall said: “New Doctor, new home! Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor is about to burst into Sunday nights — and make the end of the weekend so much more exciting.

“Get everybody’s homework done, sort out your Monday clothes, then grab some special Sunday night popcorn, and settle down with all of the family for Sunday night adventures across space and time. (Also, move the sofa away from the wall so parents can hide behind it during the scary bits). The Thirteenth Doctor is falling from the sky and it’s going to be a blast.”

Doctor Who‘s new series premiere, ‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth’, is written by Chibnall and directed by Jamie Childs – and will feature guest appearances from Sharon D Clarke, Johnny Dixon and Samuel Oatley.
