Karen Gillan hasn’t travelled with the Doctor since 2013, but she has recently weighed in on who could replace Jodie Whittaker in the upcoming series of Doctor Who. The 13th Time Lord will bow out of the TARDIS next year, and Gillan has named Adam Driver as her top pick to take over the classic BBC series.
Ex-Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan believes Adam Driver could be the perfect replacement for Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor.
In July of this year the BBC confirmed Whittaker would be stepping down from the role after three series and a trilogy of special episodes airing next year.
Series 13 will air later this year, and team the Doctor with a new companion portrayed by John Bishop.
Speaking recently to RadioTimes, Karen Gillan revealed who she’d like to be given the keys to the TARDIS in series 14.
She admitted: “I haven’t heard anything, so all I can think about are my own favourite actors.
“Adam Driver would be good. But he’s American,” Gillan added.
The Doctor has famously been portrayed by British actors ever since the series first began in 1966.
They have also retained an English accent throughout most of the show’s tenure, though Scottish actors Sylvester McCoy and Peter Capaldi kept their regional accents.
Adam Driver landing the role would mark the first time the Doctor has been portrayed by an actor from outside of the United Kingdom within the main series.
However, Karen Gillan conceded his native accent could provide a problem when the show’s producers eventually make their decision.
She continued: “I love America, I live in America, but the Doctor has to have a British accent, surely.”
Finally, the star suggested helpfully: “Perhaps he can put one on!”

The Oscar-nominated star is well-known for another major sci-fi property, portraying the villainous Kylo Ren in Disney’s rebooted Star Wars trilogy.
He has also starred in a number of independent and major Hollywood studio films, from Marriage Story, BlacKkKlansman and this year’s surrealist musical Annette.
Could he be about to add the 14th Doctor to his ever-expanding resume?
Currently, bookies’ odds on Driver starring in the next series of Doctor Who are slim.
Recent favourites include I May Destroy You’s star and creator Michaela Coel, while Welsh actor Michael Sheen was voted the most popular choice by fans this year.
Plus, fellow Brit Jo Martin could also be a shoo-in for the role as she appeared as a mysterious alternative version of the Doctor in Whittaker’s last outing.
Fans would no doubt love to see Adam Driver wielding the sonic screwdriver, but his packed schedule and Hollywood pedigree may sadly rule him out of the running.
Doctor Who series 13 will premiere in 2021 on BBC One.
