DIY SOS star Nick Knowles hoping to become new Bear Grylls by hosting survival show on Channel 5 – The Sun

NICK Knowles must have sneaked a pen and paper into the I’m A Celeb jungle and taken notes — he’s swapping DIY for survival training.

And in what might just be the only brand of TV show still filming at the moment, his new venture will see him surviving in self-isolation in a remote environment.

The programme, titled Castaway and meant to be out later this year on Channel 5, is being made by the team behind Joanna Lumley’s Hidden Caribbean: Havana To Haiti.

A source said: “Channel 5 love a big name, and with Jane McDonald trudging out of the door after quitting cruising, they’ve turned to Nick, who they think could be like an everyman’s Bear Grylls.

“The show is being made for primetime and would see him live in the middle of nowhere and forced to survive.

“They’re really excited about it and hope the current crisis won’t stop it, given it’s basically extreme self-isolation”

Nick, whose next series of DIY SOS has been postponed after filming was halted this week because of the Covid-19 outbreak, had previously said his dream was to continue making more hit TV shows.

He moaned: “I’m not a builder or a designer and have never been involved with DIY.

“If I wanted to go down the building route, I could have made millions in advertising and had my own line of curtains.

“But I’m a programme maker. For me, it’s about making really good television.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a quiz show or a history drama, I’m just looking to get seven million viewers on anything I do.”

If anything on Channel 5 gets anywhere close to seven million any time soon, I’ll chip in for your own remote paradise island to live on . . .
