Did You Catch All of These 'Broad City' Easter Eggs Throughout the Series?

Not to be dramatic, but Broad City is almost over, and I really don’t know how I’ll ever recover. Watching Abbi and Ilana gallivant through New York City literally feels like we’re all in on the same, stupid inside joke.

In honor of the final season premiere of the show that just really gets us all, here are some of the Easter eggs you may have missed throughout the last four seasons.

Abbi and Ilana lowkey really ARE Abbi and Ilana.

It’s a pretty well known fact that Abbi Abrams and Ilana Wexler are characters loosely based on the show’s creators, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer. But, throughout the series, there are plenty of subtle little reminders that they have a lot in common with their namesakes.

For example, Abbi is a Maryland Institute College of Art alum in the show and real life.

Ilana Wexler’s Broad City brother, Eliot, is played by her actual brother Eliot. He’s also a producer on the show. Oh, and the last name “Wexler” is actually their mother’s maiden name!

Abbi still has her iconic blue bandage dress.

If streaming services could get their shit together and give us the shuffle button we all deserve, and you were to shuffle the entire series of Broad City, there’s a pretty solid chance that you’d land on an episode where Abbi wears the blue bandage dress she buys in the first season for $438. She plans to return it, and even asks the cashier about the store’s policy, but then ends up wearing it every single time she has an even remotely special occasion.

Actually, the characters are serial outfit repeaters for a reason. You’ll notice that wedges, shorts, pants, and tops are reused all of the time, which is part of the reason the show feels so real.

In a Women’s Wear Daily video, Abbi revealed that there were actually three blue bondage dresses used on set, and she kept one for herself. It isn’t actually worth $438; it’s from a website called Hot Miami Styles, where many of the most outlandish Broad City outfits were found.

The exact dress isn’t still available, but Hot Miami Styles always keeps a variety of bandage dresses in stock, and this blue ribbed tank dress is prettyyyyy similar if you’re trying to channel some of your own Abbi energy.

Ilana’s outfits make political statements.

TBH, Broad City could totally suck and I’d still watch it just to see what kind of crazy outfit they’re going to stick Ilana in. But, if you look closely, you’ll see that her looks have a political leaning.

In “Just the Tips,” the season four episode where Ilana balls out after receiving a truly baller amount of cash at her new waitressing job, she gets nail art featuring the Obama family.

You’ve really gotta zoom in to appreciate this one.

In “Friendiversary,” Ilana rocks a denim jacket covered in her favorite inspirational women, from Ruth Bader Ginsburg to Abbi Abrams to Hilary Clinton.

There’s a major Beyoncé shoutout you may have missed.

The “Florida” episode in season four is an absolute GOLD MINE. First of all, the condo that they shoot in is actually Ilana’s late grandmother’s condo in real life.

There’s a montage in the episode where the duo goes grocery shopping and rides around town dressed like two Florida grandmas. Ilana told WWD that this scene is actually an homage to Beyoncé, as the birds-eye shot of them hanging out in the convertible is meant to mimic a shot of Queen Bey doing the same thing in Lemonade.

ALSO, Ilana’s Florida grandma outfit includes a shirt with lemons on it, which is an intentional shoutout to Bey’s empowering vid.

Abbi gets recognized as Val before we even learn who Val is.

In the fifth episode of season two, “Hashtag Fomo,” we meet Abbi’s alter-ego, Val. Val is the classic Hollywood nightclub performer that Abbi becomes every time she is blackout drunk.

Stream “Hashtag Fomo”

If you rewatch the season two premiere, “In Heat,” you’ll find that an elderly lady on the subway actually recognizes Abbi as Val in the opening scene. In the moment, it makes no sense to viewers because we have no idea who TF Val is, but in retrospect, it’s HILARIOUS.

PS, Val actually is the name of Abbi’s blackout alter-ego IRL. In college, she’d drink Southern Comfort (…moment of silence while we all question that decision), and turn into Val.

Garol is all over the place.

Remember Garol? The tough as nails mail clerk who refuses to give Abbi Jeremy’s package in the first season?

Stream “Working Girls

She is played by the late actress Virginia Robinson, who really ate that nasty yogurt on a 90 degree day. Virginia actually pops up in three separate episodes throughout the series; at the mail center in “Working Girls,” at the bar that Abbi Val performs at in “Hashtag Fomo” and as an employee at a sex store that Ilana makes Eliot meet her at in “Just the Tips.”

It’s never really clear if she’s actually Garol every time, but that’s just the ~magic~ of Broad City, potentially the greatest show of our generation.

The final season of Broad City premieres tonight on Comedy Central at 10 p.m.
