Sara (Caity Lotz) is willing to go to hell and back — literally — for her ex-girlfriend Ava (Jes Macallan) on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
In the above exclusive clip from Monday’s episode — hilariously titled “The Eggplant, The Witch & The Wardrobe” — a distressed Sara rushes back onto the Waverider and informs the team that Ava is missing. Of course, everyone immediately realizes that Neron, who is “wearing Desmond as a bleeding suit,” is behind it.
Because of her connection with Neron, Nora (Courtney Ford) offers to help Sara find her beloved; however, Constantine (Matt Ryan) objects to this latest team-up because he thinks Nora is a liability given how susceptible she was to a demonic influence last season. Thankfully, the ever-chivalrous Ray (Brandon Routh) stands and defends Nora’s honor.
“She’s not a liability. She’s a survivor,” says Ray. “Unlike you, she’s turned her dark experience into a source of strength, not an excuse for alcoholism or chain-smoking. She also saved your life.” Even Nora couldn’t have put it better herself.
Ava’s life hangs in the balance, so Sara has no time to worry about any of this. “I don’t care if she’s a liability,” she says. “If Neron has Ava, I need all of the magical firepower we got.”
Sara is definitely right about needing as much magic as she can find because she’ll soon learn that Ava is in her own personal hell. “She’s stuck in this mega furniture store-purgatory, ” Lotz tells EW. “It’s pretty funny and also scary at the same time.”
This idea that being trapped somewhere resembling a certain Swedish furniture store chain is a fate worse than hell for Ava ties back into the season’s interest in exploring”real life relationship challenges being the things that truly terrifying to our two capable captains,” says showrunner Phil Klemmer, who describes the entire episode as “mind-bending” and “metaphysical.”
Previously, Klemmer told EW that he believed part of the problem in Sara and Ava’s relationship is that they neither of them is particularly comfortable with domesticity. “For Sara and Ava, they both have extraordinary responsibilities, and neither is willing to compromise,” said Klemmer. “[They] have never had a period of domesticity. They’re kind of best when they’re standing in the flames and the world is coming apart around them. Sometimes paradoxically, the hardest, scariest thing to do is sit on the couch or sort through the mail and talk about who’s going to take the trash out. We thought that’s very delightful, that for Sara and Ava the most mundane challenges would actually be the most epic because they skipped to the epic stuff in the beginning of their relationship and now they’re having to do things backwards.”
