Danny John-Jules has shared the reason behind his Death in Paradise departure.
Currently competing for the prestigious Glitterball trophy on Strictly Come Dancing, Danny says that a lack of “razzmatazz” influenced his decision to leave BBC One’s exotic crime series.
The smooth mover recently spoke to TV Times, where he admitted: “I left Death in Paradise because I wanted to get back on stage. I needed a bit more razzmatazz in my life, and then along came Strictly!”
Danny had featured in every single series of Death in Paradise since its debut in 2011, portraying Officer Dwayne Myers alongside performers such as Ben Miller, Kris Marshall and Ardal O’Hanlon.
Sci-fi/horror genre fans will also know Danny from Blade 2 and cult TV show Red Dwarf. And those of a certain age will remember him in Maid Marian and Her Merry Men too.
On his Strictly experience, Danny shared: “I haven’t done a [stage] show for more than 20 years, so this is as close as I’m going to get to doing the jazz hands again. I’ve also been working on my one-man show about Sammy Davis Jnr, that’s why I’m always wearing a bowler hat!”
His exit from the Caribbean island might not be as conclusive as fans once thought though, as the actor has also revealed that he’d like to do a Dwayne spin-off.
“I have an idea, but I just need to meet up with the producer, Tony Jordan, to touch base and run it past him,” he teased.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One on Saturday night at 6.30pm.
