Towie viewers saw Dan and Amber having a tearful conversation on Sunday’s show, but insiders say the issues go far deeper than their on-camera rows and the reality stars are “going through a rough patch” in their relationship.
An insider tells The Sun Online: “Things have been rocky between Dan and Amber. He’s not really sure what he wants and has been confiding in his family and friends, asking them what to do.
“He hasn’t been happy for a while and now, with Kate and Rio getting engaged, it’s put things in perspective.
“Is there any point continuing the relationship if Amber is the wrong girl for him?
“He’s tried and of course he loves her so they’re trying to make things right. But everyone’s worried they’re about to split.”
A source close to Dan added: “It’s true that Dan has been confiding in his family lately over some personal issues and that he and Amber have been going through a rough patch.
“They are doing their best to patch things up and work through it as best they can and are still a couple, even though things are strained.”
Dan’s publicist has been contacted for comment. Amber’s reps denied the story.
In the teaser on Sunday’s show, fans saw Amber crying as Dan said he’s worried that her on-camera rows will “break” them.
“I want us to be on the same team. I want us to have each other’s backs and I just felt s**t about it,” she replied.
Amber recently went on a social media rant about how much pressure she’s under on Towie.
Hitting out after fans sent her death threats after her on-screen row with Kady, Amber wrote: "Every situation on Towie is heightened due to film crew, people getting in your head before scenes, the pressure to make good TV and not be boring.
“So please remember this when judging so harshly when the episode is explosive and shocking.”
Amber and Dan have been dating on and off since 2017.
Dan and Kate dated on and off for six years before splitting at Christmas 2016. He later said of their split: "I was with Kate for a long time so I think there will always be feelings there. She has an amazing body."
Kate found love with footballer Rio the following year, and they got engaged during their holiday to Abu Dhabi last week.
