Corriewood! Coronation Streetmore in demand than big US names for top TV roles

Screenwriter Jonathan Harvey said a history of talented actresses had helped make the soap a northern powerhouse of new talent that is taking over television.

Stars of the soap have a reputation for working hard, arriving on time, quickly learning a vast number of lines and turning their acting talents to anything from comedy to high drama.

That has led to a host of former Corrie actresses hitting the big time, with Sarah Lancashire, Suranne Jones, Katherine Kelly, Sally Lindsay, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Joanne Froggatt, Michelle Keegan, Siobhan Finneran, Angela Griffin, Anne Reid and Joanna Lumley all getting their breaks on the Street.

The soap is seen as a launchpad to an A-list career.

Jonathan, who writes for the show, said: “I’ve got a friend, a British actress who is very successful in America. And if she goes up for anything in Britain, she gets beaten by someone from Coronation Street.’’

He said in the past some former stars had missed out on good follow-up roles due to “snobbery” over how the soap actors were perceived.

Jonathan added: “That seems to have disappeared. They can cope with a schedule and learn rewrites in minutes – which saves a production company a lot.’’
