Coronation Street's week in review – why Cormac's dramatic death has come at exactly the right time

Coronation Street upped the ante in the drama stakes this week, with Cormac Truman’s shock drugs death and Josh Tucker’s unwelcome return causing high tensions on the cobbles.

But which plots were must-see this week and which ones didn’t quite hit the mark? Here, we’re rounding up the highlights and lowlights with some more of our hits and misses.

HIT! Cormac’s death

For us, Corrie has lacked a big storyline over the past few months, with a more comedy-focused summer slightly outstaying its welcome by straying into September, while the other soaps have been airing some of their strongest material of the year.

With that in mind, we’re relieved to see the dramatic stakes getting higher again after Cormac passed away from a drugs overdose on Friday night (September 28). While there’s nothing new about seeing Michelle in trouble – gangster Ronan will soon become the fourth madman to hassle her in the space of 12 months – we’re really looking forward to seeing how newcomers Ryan Prescott (Ryan) and James Burrows (Ali) handle their first big storyline.

There’s lots to come with this plot in October and a few surprises along the way, so watch this space.

MISS! Josh still hanging around

David’s rape storyline has provided some of the show’s most powerful scenes of the year, but after Josh spent forever in hospital and then inexplicably moved in with Billy the vicar, it’s almost started to feel like the writers don’t know how to end this particular plot. Perhaps we’ll be eating our words after Josh and David’s final showdown next week, though, so we’ll see.

One aspect of the storyline we do have to praise are the performances from the cast involved. Jack P Shepherd (David) and Daniel Brocklebank (Billy) really shone in their heated scenes on Friday night, while Ryan Clayton (Josh) has always been excellent as one of the most three-dimensional villains the show has seen.

HIT! Steve and Leanne give into temptation

Steve and Leanne’s latest one-night stand may have divided opinion on social media, but we did laugh a lot at the moment they were caught in the act by Peter and Tim. Although goodness knows why they weren’t savvy enough to keep it to the bedroom rather than the living room – with the number of people who live in that flat, it was inevitable that someone would walk in.

Despite Steve and Leanne constantly claiming they have no chemistry as a couple, we reckon Simon Gregson and Jane Danson do work together really well in their scenes. Maybe Steve could even be an unlikely love rival for Nick when he returns…

MISS! Jim and Hannah’s con continues

Surely Liz and Steve should catch a glimpse of Hannah’s constant evil glares soon? Corrie‘s most controversial story of the moment rumbled on this week, as Liz helpfully offered up all of her life savings to her fake daughter with (conveniently) very few questions asked.

While we loved the bonkers element of the similar Fake Dee story in Neighbours, it’s hard not to think that a plot like this seems slightly out of place in the more realistic Corrie. Linking it to the tragic loss of a baby, which was brilliantly performed at the time, also makes the story very difficult to get on board with. Plus, when even Corrie superfan Lorraine Kelly is slating a storyline, it’s usually a bad sign.

HIT! Ken and Claudia

Rula Lenska’s return as super-posh Claudia Colby has been a delight to watch and we loved seeing Ken shamelessly invite her over for dinner to get salacious salon tales from her for his new writing project.

While we don’t want to see glamorous Claudia shacked up with Ken in boring old Number 1 anytime soon, we do think there’s a great chemistry between the two of them which could be explored further – even just as friends. Let’s hope Claudia has enough scandalous stories to keep this plot running for a while.

MISS! Jude’s lies continue

After struggling to find a plot that sticks for Jude, Corrie now seems to be running wild with the idea that he’s a compulsive liar. Which admittedly is true, but let’s not forget that his mum Mary was the one happily hiring actors to play his fake workmates just a few months ago, so it’s easy to see where he gets it from.

Now Jude is still taking the credit for saving Roy from a pesky bee sting and ploughing ahead with his “dream” of becoming a paramedic, even though he faints at the sight of the smallest finger cut. Mary may have to find some aspiring thespians to pose as fellow paramedics soon…
