Coronation Street's week in review – hits, misses and why Henry Newton should come back

It’s been a week of high tension on Coronation Street, with Henry getting his comeuppance, Kate and Rana falling out, and Peter Barlow being targeted in a “shock shooting” that wasn’t all that shocking.

But which plots were must-see this week and which ones didn’t quite hit the mark? Here, we’re rounding up the highlights and lowlights with some more of our hits and misses.

HIT! All hail Henry

Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve gone ’til it’s gone? We’ve been a bit ambivalent about posh boy Henry during his two stints on the cobbles, but his final few appearances really saw him come into his own. The unlikely romantic pairing with Gemma was getting stronger and more watchable with each episode, while Henry’s general hapless nature and comic timing added a nice new flavour into the current cast.

Sadly, just when we were starting to like Henry, his story came to a rather abrupt end. We’re now really hoping that actor George Banks will be invited back for another stint, despite his character leaving in disgrace. If the likes of Lewis can be forgiven after much worse cons, then why not Henry? But while we’re on the topic…

MISS! Henry’s grim exit

If Corrie want us to root for Gemma and Chesney as a future couple, they’re going the wrong way about it, as Henry’s exit actually left a pretty bad taste in the mouth on Bank Holiday Monday. When his ruthless plans to scam the Connors were exposed, it was pretty satisfying to see Johnny and Jenny hilariously turn the tables on him in a showdown at The Rovers.

But where things seemed to go too far was the moment where Gemma and Chesney happily let Henry be carted off by the thugs who were planning to beat him up over the cash he owed. (They may have been hilariously inept, but they still meant business!)

The pretty nasty ending felt more like something EastEnders hardman Phil Mitchell would get up to, rather than supposedly likeable characters like Gemma and Ches. Plus, since Gemma used to be a criminal cohort of Callum’s and has been given countless chances for redemption herself, it all felt a bit hypocritical.

Unlike EastEnders and their habit of airing frustratingly vague exits, Corrie did briefly confirm Henry’s fate in the next episode, revealing that he was in hospital with a fractured collarbone. It could have been worse – in Walford, he would have ended up in the car crusher…

HIT! Kana stay strong… well, eventually

The draining Kana angst was back in full force this week, as the popular couple nearly split up (again!) over Rana’s decision to put some trust in her mum Saira and head off on a six-week cruise with her. When Rana announced her decision, it sparked a furious reaction from Kate, who wasn’t doing too well in the likeability stakes this week.

We had a feeling that Corrie would leave us hanging over Kana’s future for the entire six-week duration of the cruise, so it was a pretty welcome relief when they later kissed and made up, defying our expectations. Kate even admitted she was wrong, which is a rarity.

We’ve probably had our fill of Kana misery for a while now, so our hope is that this happy ending paves the way for a refreshing new direction for the pair once Rana is back from sailing the seas. We’ve said it before, but a laugh or two would be nice.

MISS! Peter’s not-so-shocking shooting

One for our list of those cheeky soaps deliberately lying to viewers, as Peter wasn’t the victim of a shock shooting after all. Corrie‘s official spoilers for the week revealed that troublesome Tyler would fire a gun straight at Peter’s chest, leaving Carla screaming in horror. All sounds pretty dramatic, right? Well, what the spoilers sneakily didn’t mention was that it was just a paintball gun and it was all over within seconds.

Does the trade descriptions act apply to soap spoilers? We hope nobody stayed in to watch specially. (Although let’s be honest, if Corrie ever killed off Peter, that’d really get us moaning.)

HIT! Tina back from the dead… sort of

Corrie‘s “Tina McIntyre lookalike” may have looked nothing like her according to some unimpressed fans, but it was still pretty fun to see Carla testing Peter with the face from the past. The presence of newcomer Carina helped Peter to prove to Carla that he’s a changed man, as he avoided temptation and declined to hire her at Underworld.

If Corrie really wanted to mess with Peter’s mind though, maybe they should have asked Michelle Keegan to play her own lookalike, in the style of Fake Dee from Neighbours. Michelle has optimistically said that she’d like to return, after all, and that’d be one way to get soap mag front covers without having to hype up false shooting dramas!

HIT! Brian’s secret identity

It’s not the most dramatic of plots, but we’ve loved the ongoing silliness of Weatherfield’s younger residents convincing themselves that Brian Packham is Father Christmas… and behaving themselves accordingly whenever he’s around or his name gets mentioned!

Chesney and Tyrone considered telling their confused kids the truth, until they realised that Brian’s presence was the only thing keeping the unruly lot in order. Could this plot come to a dramatic and unmissable climax at Christmas when the kids see Brian and Santa in the same room and realise they’ve been duped? Sounds like this year’s festive comedy storyline is sorted…

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
