This can often lead to parent and child being far closer to each others’ age in real life than they would appear on screen – and long running ITV soap Coronation Street is a big offender.
Corrie actress Sue Nicholls is only seven years older than her co-star Helen Worth – despite the pair being mother and daughter on set.
Veteran Street star Sue – who plays Audrey Roberts – is 74 in real life, but amazingly, Helen – Gail Platt – is 67.
Last Friday, Audrey mentioned her and Gail's real ages when discussing fraudster Lewis Archer, saying: “Gail, the thing is you are 60 and I am 78 and this is the last chance I’d get to get a bit of happiness”.
But can you guess the real-life age gaps of these other legendary Corrie characters?
Keeping with The Platts, mum and daughter Sarah Louise Platt and Bethany are aged 31 and 18 respectively on TV.
Sarah is of course the daughter of long-suffering Gail and the late Brian Tilsley.
While on-screen daughter Bethany is the product of Sarah’s a teenage pregnancy with school friend Neil Fearns – but how old are the pair in real life?
We already know that Gail is 60 on screen while actress Helen is 67.

Ben Price has been playing the character since 2009 – and the character is meant to be 37, but is Ben’s real age closer to his character or closer to Helen’s age?
Scatty florist Mary Taylor is aged 48 in the soap while her long lost son Jude Appleton is 34.
But how old are the two real life actors Patti Clare and Paddy Wallace?
Sadly for one of them, their character is older than they are in real life – while the other is just a touch younger on screen than they are off-screen.
The late Maggie Jones played acid-tongued battleaxe Blanche Hunt.

Former Coronation Street star Jimmi Mistry played 46-year-old Kal Nazir – while Sair Kahn was his on screen daughter Aliya Nazir.
The characters had 21 years between them as Aliya was 25.
But it is a different story for the father and daughter off air – as the age gap is much closer.
The Battersby’s were one of soaps favourite families.
But ages are a little different in real life for Janice Battersby and her on-screen daughter Toyah.
The former would be 53 as her character, while the latter is 36 – but the real ages are quite different.

Sarah Louise Platt and Bethany have 13-years between them – but Tina O’Brien is 34 in real life and Lucy Fallon, who is troubled Bethany is 22 – making the age gap just 12 years.
Returning Nick Tilsley is 37 on the box while actor Ben Price is 46 – this was a slight trick question as on-screen son and mother Ben and Helen have 22 years between them, but Ben is almost 10 years older than his on-screen character.
Mother and son Mary and Jude are 48 and 34 respectively, but actress Patti Clare 42 years old away from the cameras while Paddy Wallace is 38…a mere four years difference in real life!
Ken Barlow was son-in-law to Blanche Hunt due to his marriage to Deirdre – but in real life actors Bill and Maggie had just two years between them with the Ken actor being older than his on-screen mother-in-law having been born in 1932 while Maggie was born in 1934.
Jimmi Mistry may have been 46 as Kal Nazir, but he is actually 45 in real life – while on-screen daughter Sair Kahn’s actual age is 30 – a difference of just 15 years.
Actress Vicky Entwistle was aged by Coronation Street as her real life age is 49 while her character Janice Battersby is 53 – while her on screen daughter Toyah was 36, but her real age is 38 – a difference of just 11 real life years.
