Viewers tuned in to the first of Wednesday’s Corrie double episode to see Rana dramatically declare her love for Kate to her mother, Saira Habeeb.
Shocking her mum with the truth, Rana insisted she was not lying about her feelings, declaring: “You're not listening. I love her. I never finished it. Me and Kate are still together.”
A shell shocked Saira then chastised Rana for lying to her father before he died – with him believing Rana was no longer in a lesbian relationship when he passed away.
Declaring to Rana: “You make me sick!” the angry mother stormed off.
This led to an emotional confrontation between the two women in the streets of Weatherfield – with Rana boldly standing up for her feelings.
“For the first time in my life I feel right! You and dad were prepared to cut me out and never see me again just because I'd fallen in love,” she declared.
She also offered an ultimatum: “Accept my relationship and accept Kate and we can be a family again.”
The confrontation quickly brought Saira to her senses.
“I've already lost a husband. You're right. We need to rebuild our family. I can't lose you too,” she declared.
Saira then tearfully added: “I don't understand it. I wish things were different. But I know, you're an intelligent young woman. If you say you love Kate then I have to learn to accept it.”
Fans of the soap praised the writers for writing a powerfully emotional coming out scene for Rana.
“Full credit to @itvcorrie for their sexuality storyline with Kate & Rana,” one viewer gushed on Twitter.
“As a gay man myself it wasn’t easy to ‘come out’ without the fear of losing the respect of my friends & family. Everyone is entitled to live the life they want to lead without fear,” he added.
However, Rana’s stunning declaration of love may have been in vain – as it looks like her relationship with Kate might be over regardless.
Announcing that she intended to go on a cruise with her mother to patch things up after Saira had taken the first steps to accepting her sexuality, Kate demanded Rana cancel her trip to spend time with her instead.
“After everything she's done you think she wants to make amends? How stupid can you get? As soon as you go on that cruise she's going to turn you against me,” Kate raged.
Begging Rana not to go on the cruise, Kate exclaimed: “Don't expect me to be waiting for you when you get back,” as a tearful Rana left the house.
Fans were left reeling by the scene, with one viewer tweeting: “Noooooooooooooo please don't say this is the end of #Kana ? #corrie @itvcorrie @faye_brookes @BhavnaLimbachia.”
