Lewis – who is played by actor Nigel Havers in the ITV soap – will return to the cobbles this week when he leaves his victim Gail Platt shocked when she discovers £40,000 has been put into her account on his behalf as he claims to be trying to righting his past wrongs.
He conned Gail out of the money back in 2013 when he pretended to be in love with her and made plans to move to Italy, convincing her to take out a second mortgage to fund the move.
But once he had the money he filmed a gleeful confession and fled to Belize, leaving Gail struggling to keep her house and pay back the money.
Lewis recently returned after being exposed as the man behind fraudulent psychic Rosemary Piper, but claimed to have changed for ex Audrey Roberts.
However, fans will know that the £40,000 figure has also been mentioned in another conman storyline – Duncan Radfield setting Sally Metcalfe up for fraud.
That conman created a fake charity to scam the council of a £40,000 fund, convincing the then Mayor Sally to help him with it.
However it has now become clear that Duncan had set Sally up for the fraud and even constructed an elaborate fake affair between the pair to prove it to the police.
But with a mystery surrounding where Duncan stashed the £40,000, could he have put it in Gail's account at Lewis' insistence?
The numbers seem too convenient to be a coincidence but there has been no obvious connection between the con men up until now.
A Coronation Street source insisted that Lewis is just trying to be a good guy and win Audrey back by giving the money back.
But will Gail ever allow her mother to be with a man who wrecked her life so spectacularly?
