Coronation Street bosses are introducing a new gay character after backlash over killing off lesbian Rana Habeeb

CORRIE is introducing a new gay character — days after a backlash over killing off lesbian Rana Habeeb.

The LGBT community blasted it after Rana died just before the soap’s first gay wedding.

Now producers are casting an actor to play rising football star Kai, who has yet to come out to his parents.

A source said: “Corrie has had strong LGBT characters for a long time but viewers were left devastated when they killed off Rana just before she tied the knot.

“They’re now hunting for a new gay character called Kai, and held auditions last week.

In the family’s first scenes Kai comes out to his brother Michael after a gay man knocks at their new home, looking for him.

“Kai will be a rising football star, who is also black, and he’s worried that being out will cause him issues.”

Viewers will see him in the coming months. Some complained to Ofcom after Rana, played by Bhavna Limbachia, was crushed by a factory roof. She exchanged vows with fiance Kate (Faye Brookes) before she died.

One viewer said the scenes “triggered” young LGBT fans who thought they would see a same-sex wedding.
