Coronation Concert in full – BBC name error, Lionel Richie voice change and fury

The Coronation Concert for King Charles III kicked off on Sunday night (May 7) with performances from huge celebs including Katy Perry, Paloma Faith and Take That.

But the star-studded event was also riddled with malfunctions and blunders, with fans left fuming at more than one stage in the evening.

From Lionel Richie sounding ‘unrecognisable’ as he performed his greatest hits to James Nesbitt left in complete awkward silence as he was supposed to read aloud, there was plenty for royal fans to get their teeth stuck into.

Lionel Richie 'unrecognisable'

Some fans were left baffled as Lionel Richie took to the stage to perform his hits Easy and All Night Long – as he appeared to be singing in a much lower register.

Worried fans flocked in droves to Twitter to comment, with one writing: “I thought it was bad when Kermit didn't sound like Kermit… but now Lionel Richie doesn't sound like Lionel Richie.”

Another agreed: “Why doesn't Lionel Richie sound like Lionel Richie?”

Lionel has battled health issues over the years which saw him undergo four ultimately useless surgeries – with doctors warning him he could lost his voice.

Afterwards, one doctor finally discovered the root cause – Lionel was diagnosed with diet-induced acid reflux, which was affecting his throat.

The condition causes the feeling of heartburn, when stomach acid travels back up towards the throat.

Lionel had been consuming ice cream, protein powder and weight gain shakes before bed – which is notoriously difficult to digest and can cause the condition.

Nicole Scherzinger name blunder

TV and radio presenter Kirsty Young was left red-faced just minutes into the proceedings as she struggled to pronounce Nicole Scherzinger’s name.

When King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived Kirsty said: "There of course we see the arrival of their Majesties the King and Queen.

“There is not very much that could upstage Nicole Sherginer,” she stumbled, before giggling: “You know who I mean!”

Fans couldn’t cope with the blunder, as one social media user joked: “Did she say I can't even say, Nicole Scherzinger? She just did. Lol.”

“Not the presenter pronouncing Nicole Scherzinger's name so horribly,” another echoed.

While another said: “Nicole Scherzinger or whatever her name is, dear me what a mess."

Fan fury

Viewers weren’t too impressed by the line-up of stars at the concert – with some comparing it to a night at Butlins.

Despite the appearance of stars like Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Take That, it was difficult to impress the jaded audience back home, and they soon took to social media to fume over the A-listers on offer.

One fan said: “This Coronation concert line-up sounds like a line-up from Butlins in Skegness.”

As someone else fumed: “It’s always Take That or Olly Murs on these things! CBA! Watching The Chase instead.”

A third viewer said: “Just seen the line-up for the #CoronationConcert and I’ve gone ‘who?’ for half of them!”

“Must be my age, the line-up for the Coronation concert looks pants,” another echoed.

Major tech blunder

Actor James Nesbitt was left red-faced as he suffered an awkward minute of silence as the cameras switched to him – with him set to make a speech about lights coming on across the country.

Instead, the crowd began cheering and James looked into the camera as though awaiting his cue – though it had already come and gone.

Fans took to social media to comment on the blunder, with one writing: "I don't think James Nesbit realised he was on then!" alongside a laughing face emoji.

Another penned: "Oh poor #JamesNesbit guessing his mic failed, hence cut away and then suddenly a hand mic."

A third wrote: "Oh that was awkward! James Nesbit getting cold feet."

With Kermit and Miss Piggy on hand to provide some comic relief – and to flirt with King Charles – Camilla reportedly wasn't impressed.

She could be seen looking unhappy as Miss Piggy joked about tying the knot with the new monarch, and Daily Star had a body language expert on hand to provide her critique.

Adrianne Carter, better known as The Face Whisperer, explained: "Camilla is very much a straight player with her facial expressions and her facial expressions say ‘not funny’ for the muppets.

“When she does smile it looks forced rather than genuine…"
