Comic-Con 2022: What To Expect From Marvel, Dwayne Johnson & Those Dragonslayers On HBO

After two years without an in-person Comic-Con, fans are definitely holding out for the appearance of a few heroes. Fortunately, the ongoing pandemic — and skepticism over whether the Con will truly enforce those mask protocols — won’t keep the newest caped crusaders from braving the annual nerdfest that kicks off Thursday in San Diego.

Marvel shouldn’t disappoint with sneak peeks of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and the upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Disney+. But it’s not expected to shower Hall H with an embarrassment of riches like they did in 2019; some sources believe Marvel is saving it all up for Disney’s fan convention D23 during the second weekend of September, specifically in regards to new projects. There’s still stuff we haven’t seen, specifically the Fantastic Four reboot, Mahershala Ali in The Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (due May 5), The Marvels (July 28, 2023) and The Mutants.

Dwayne Johnson and the Warner Bros theatrical session will serve as Marvel’s opening act earlier in the day, with Black Adam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods getting their much-deserved closeups on the Hall H stage. There’s also buzz that Henry Cavill will put in a surprise appearance to talk up more Superman.

Keanu Reeves is making an appearance at the confab to talk up his BRZRKR movie, while John Wick director Chad Stahelski is on a Collider director’s panel elsewhere at the Con. So it wouldn’t come as a shock if somehow there’s a surprise tease for Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 (opening March 24, 2023) lurking around somewhere. Talent loves to surprise fans, and at the last in person Comic-Con, Tom Cruise big-footed Paramount/Skydance’s Terminator: Dark Fate panel to show off the first teaser to Top Gun: Maverick.

No Mav appearance scheduled for this year, but Paramount is promising an early look of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Then again, maybe we’re overlooking the real theatrical draw for this year’s Con: after all, it’s easy to forget how Tyler Posey used to bring down the roof whenever Teen Wolf the series took over Hall H. Now he and Tyler Hoechlin will be there for Teen Wolf: The Movie. Let the demolition of Hall H resume!

Remember when very un-Comic-Con shows like The Middle and Hawaii Five-0 used to do panels at the convention center? Those dog days are (mostly) over — save for a few rando appearances from police procedurals (we’re talking about you, The Rookie and The Rookie: Feds). Most of the small-screen lineup for the next four days sits right in the Con’s sweet spot, thanks to the increasing number of streamers coming to San Diego. House of Dragons and Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be the biggest draws, along with another visit from The Walking Dead, the Star Trek Universe, Robert and Michelle King’s Evil and Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire. Lots of animated shows will get their traditional moment to shine, too, including Bob’s Burgers, Archer, The Orville and Family Guy.

But in the end, maybe we don’t need a big reveal from Marvel or a never-before-seen outtake from the Game of Thrones prequel. Maybe all we really need is candor-filled hour with the great William Shatner. And looks like you’re in luck, you kooky cosplayers: the Shat will hold court with Kevin Smith in Hall H.

Below is a sampling of notable film and TV panels.
