Comedian Kathy Burke says Cheryl would have sold more records if she hadn't hit toilet attendant

The award-winning Gimme Gimme Gimme star, 54, took to Twitter after it was revealed Cheryl's comeback single Love Made Me Do It nosedived to No. 48 in official chart figures.

She wrote: "Maybe if Cheryl hadn't punched that toilet attendant more people would buy her records."

She then added: "Punching toilet attendants isn't nice, babe."

Industry insiders say Cheryl's much-hyped record has shifted just 5,000 copies despite a high-profile performance on Sunday’s X Factor.

Streaming figures paint an even bleaker picture, showing she had slipped down to No. 110 in the daily Spotify charts just two days after the TV appearance.

However, Cheryl insists she's happy with how things are going after receiving a standing ovation from The X Factor judges.

The record has been played 460,000 times this week, while current chart topper Thank U, Next, by Ariana Grande has 6.3million plays.

In 2003, Cheryl was convicted of actual bodily harm when she punched toilet attendant Sophie Amogbokpa in a club in Guildford, Surrey. She had to complete 120 hours of unpaid community service, pay her victim £500 compensation and £3k prosecution costs.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Cheryl reacted dismissively when quizzed about the conviction.

During a chat with the The Guide, interviewer Peter Robinson asked Cheryl about her deal with L'Oreal, who terminated their work with Munroe Bergdorf when she wrote a blog criticising white privilege.

Munroe later hit out at the cosmetics giant, saying they have continued working with Cheryl, despite the fact that she was accused of racially aggravated assault over the incident. (The singer was eventually convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and cleared of any racist element.)

Cheryl said the conviction is"irrelevant" and, because, it was 16 years ago it’s “not news” and the subject is “boring”.

She added: "I don’t understand why you’d even bring it up".

Cheryl was then asked if she's surprised that people still mention the incident, and she replied: “I don’t think they do!”
