Cloak & Dagger showrunner is gunning for MCU crossovers – but this is why they won’t happen

We’ve seen Marvel’s latest series Cloak & Dagger dip into a telly crossover or two, but will we ever see the two heroes turn up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Well, as much as showrunner Joe Pokaski would like that, it’s looking very unlikely at the moment – even with Cloak and Dagger’s history of showing up everywhere in the comics.

Speaking to Vulture about his hopes for Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson in the upcoming seasons of Cloak & Dagger, Pokaski said he would like to see both characters “play with all the superheroes at one point”.

“Someone smarter than me once called [Tandy and Tyrone] the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Marvel universe. They just drop in. They can show up in an X-Men book.

“They can show up in the big crossover event. They show up on the Runaways. They show up in the Ultimate universe. And you’re always happy to see them,” he said.

The reason such a crossover can’t happen on the big screen, however, is a pretty boring one: “I think some of the challenge is how fractured the ownership is, still,” Pokaski said.

“I would love for Peter Parker to walk by, but Sony owns them. You’d like someone from the films to be there, but everything is a little bit segmented.”

Cloak & Dagger‘s showrunner went on to suggest that he doesn’t quite get why Spider-Man and the X-Men weren’t brought into the Marvel Studios world, but that Spidey’s appearance in the MCU’s smash-hit Avengers: Infinity War is “a glimmer of hope”.

“I think the segmentation is a problem. Hopefully, that will get better. I mean, the fact that Spider-Man was in the last Avengers movie still doesn’t feel real, but it seems like… a glimmer of hope.”

Fortunately for fans of the Freeform series, a second season of Cloak & Dagger has been confirmed, so there’s plenty of opportunity for potential crossovers in the future.

The news was announced at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, and season two has already been promised as “mayhem” – which is way more important than a buzzword.

Cloak & Dagger airs on Freeform in the US and is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
