Christopher Nolan Slammed for Making ‘Scathing Attack on Hinduism’ With ‘Oppenheimer’ Sex Scene

The director of the famous film is also urged to remove the sexual intercourse scene between Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh featuring a Hindu holy scripture, ‘Bhagwad Geeta.’

AceShowbizChristopher Nolan has found himself in hot water. The director of the “Oppenheimer” movie was slammed for allegedly making “a scathing attack on Hinduism” through a sex scene between Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh in the film.

The 52-year-old filmmaker was called out by Indian officials, through a journalist and government-appointed information commissioner named Uday Mahurkar, via Twitter on Sunday, July 22. In a lengthy tweet, Uday wrote, “It has come to our notice that the movie Oppenheimer contains a scene which make a scathing attack on Hinduism.”

The journalist explained, “As per social media reports, a scene in the movie shows a woman makes a man read Bhagwad Geeta aloud while getting over him and doing sexual intercourse. She is holding Bhagwad Geeta in one hand, and the other hands seems to be adjusting the position of their reproductive organs. The Bhagwad Geeta is one of the most revered scriptures of Hinduism.”

Noting that the holy book is an inspiration for Hindus, Uday went on to state, “We do not know the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene on life of a scientist. But this is a direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus, rather it amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community and almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces.”

“The agencies, media, politics and even your Hollywood film industry is very sensitive about the fact that Quran and Islam is not depicted in any manner that may offend the value system of a common Muslim, even if you make something based on Islamist terrorism,” the statement continued. “There is a term that has become popular for those who attempt to cross this red line – Islamophobia. Why should not the same courtesy be also extended to Hindus?”

Uday further asked, “We urge, on behalf of billion Hindus and timeless tradition of lives being transformed by revered Geeta, to do all that is needed to uphold dignity of their revered book and remove this scene from your film across world.” He concluded, “Should you choose to ignore this appeal it would be deemed as a deliberate assault on Indian civilisation. Eagerly await needful action.”

According to Variety, Uday’s statement came after Indians complained about the use of the sacred book, which literally means word of God, during the sex scene. Following the protests, India’s minister for information and broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, instructed the filmmaker to remove the scene featuring Hindu holy scripture in it.

The scene in question features Cillian, who depicts Robert Oppenheimer, and Florence as Jean Tatlock having sex. At one point, Jean stops to pick a copy of “Bhagavad Gita” from a bookshelf. She asks Robert to read the text. “I am become Death, destroyer of worlds,” he could be heard saying.
