Chevy Chase has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way over the years, and he doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. The 74-year-old comedian has had a lot of comments about the current generation of the Saturday Night Live cast — and none of them good.
You’d think he’d want to restore his relationship with SNL, considering he was part of the show’s original cast in 1975. He’s since been banned from returning numerous times thanks to his outrageous (and sometimes physically aggressive) behavior. Nevertheless, SNL-creator Lorne Michaels gave him another chance with an invite to the season finale in May 2018, having reportedly texted Chase, “You’re still a legend here.”
However, thanks to the comments Chase made about the current SNL cast in an interview with the Washington Post, we’re doubting he’ll ever receive an invitation again.

He called it ‘the worst f*cking humor in the world’
Chase certainly had some choice words for his opinions on the current SNL cast. “I’m amazed that Lorne [Michaels] has gone so low,” he said. “I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t f*cking believe it. That means a whole generation of sh*theads laughs at the worst f*cking humor in the world. You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse sh*t than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts.”
He didn’t just direct his hatred toward the current SNL cast. In fact, he thinks it’s been bad for quite some time. “I’d have to say, that after the first two years, it went downhill. Why am I saying that? Because I was in it? I guess. That’s a horrible thing to say. But certainly I never had more fun. I really loved it and enjoyed it. I didn’t see the same fun thing happening to the cast the next year.”
He’s liked a few cast members over the years
Only a few cast members have lived up to Chase’s standards over the years. “I liked Tina [Fey],” he admitted. “I didn’t see what all the folderol was about. She was good.”
Kristen Wiig is apparently also on his good list. “I liked her a lot. She had two things going for her. She had clear-cut chops, and she was pretty, too. But what happened to her? Where did she go?”
And Eddie Murphy? “I thought Eddie Murphy was funny. Gumby. I found that funny and people loved that … Stevie Wonder, he did well.” He then took his review too far by adding, “It’s not that hard, for Christ’s sake. Your skin’s the same color. You just put on some sunglasses and do this.”

He’s criticized the show in the past
This wasn’t the first time Chase has called out the show. During an appearance on Netflix’s Norm Macdonald Has a Show, he had thoughts about the delivery of each show’s introduction. “I mean it just gets so bad,” he said. “It seems like some guys are out there just to be the guy who says, ‘Live from New York,’ and then does it poorly. Anyway, that’s not nice of me to say, but … f*ck ’em.”
Chase apparently hopes to return to the SNL stage
Despite all his negative comments about SNL, Chase also threw in that he’d totally be down to return to the stage if asked. Though we highly doubt he’d get yet another chance, we can’t deny that Chase is part of the backbone for what we know SNL as today.
“I can’t tell you, to be up there, on that stage, doing that stuff,” Chase admitted. “Oh, God, it was fun. I’ll tell you, I’d do it again in a minute.” We’ll see about that.
