He blasted the series as "bad television" and admitted it infuriated him that reality stars are sometimes paid more than actors.
Speaking to ex-Towie star Dan Osborne in the bedroom, Ryan ranted: "I was a bit of a snob about reality TV. I used to really turn my nose up at it.
"I've never watched Towie in my life before but as an actor Towie took us out the game really. "
He continued: "[Soap stars] were the most famous people in the country at the time and then Towie came along and it was like, 'Wow, this new thing's come along'.
"As actors we put our neck out a little bit and we work really hard and these people are coming in and being themselves and they're earning more money than we are.
"For me, I really retaliated towards it but, you know what, it's not actually the people that are doing it, it's the production companies themselves."
Admitting he felt he had to jump on the reality TV bandwagon or risk being left behind, he added: "Me, personally, I think it's bad television.
"But these people are earning ten times more money than I am and now I'm going, 'You either get with it or you get left behind'."
Ryan and his brothers have now all dipped their feet in the reality TV water, with ex-Emmerdale star Adam appearing on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! in 2016.
Earlier that year, Ryan's brother Scott found fame on Love Island, where he formed a well-documented romance with fellow Islander Kady McDermott.
The heartthrob also has reality TV to thank for meeting his girlfriend Lucy as the pair fell head over heels while filming tough survival show Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls.
