‘Cats’ Trailer: Taylor Swift Plays With Catnip & Jennifer Hudson Sings For Her Life

Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson transform into lively junkyard felines in the beautiful first trailer for ‘Cats,’ and it’s already looking to be a game changer for Broadway movie adaptions!

Taylor Swift’s dreams have come true — the 29-year-old pop star has been transformed into an orange tabby who gets to wield a bedazzled can of catnip, as seen in the first trailer for Cats! The sneak peek video dropped on July 17, and it’s already packed with stunning vocals (ahem, Jennifer Hudson), beautiful costumes, and quirky feline antics (hi, Rebel Wilson). Other famous faces featured in the trailer were Idris Elba, James Corden, Ian McKellen and Jason Derulo, but they weren’t stuffed into catsuits — well, not really. To make the movie extra realistic, the actors and actresses wore motion capture suits and VFX dots to transform into eerily lifelike felines!

The trailer opens with two words in big gold font: “One night.” The movie adaption is following the Broadway classic’s storyline, as a pack of junkyard pusses called the Jellicle Cats sing their hearts out and reveal their backstories to their leader, Old Deuteronomy (played by Judi Dench), over the course of one fateful night. The leader will pick one lucky kitty to ascend to the coveted destination in Cats, the Heaviside Layer, and therefore be reincarnated into another Jellicle life! Cats first debuted on the West End in 1981, and then on Broadway the following year, but the musical is actually based on T. S. Eliot’s 1939 poem collection, “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.” Tom Hooper, director of Les Misérables, is directing the movie adaption which will premiere in theaters on Dec. 20.

Taylor’s not just any cat in this film adaptation, as she’s playing the attention-loving, seductive Bombalurina (here’s a full rundown on her character). We’ve heard that the “Reputation” singer is even eyeing a nod from the Academy! “Taylor has been blessed with tons of awards over her illustrious career, and she doesn’t see any end in sight. She is such an amazingly hard worker, so the awards mean so much to her. She would love it if she was blessed enough to become an Oscar winner too,” a source close to the Grammy-winning singer EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.

That doesn’t mean Taylor is shifting industries, as she recently moved on from Big Machine Label Group to Universal Music Group and is dropping her album under her new label, Lover, on Aug. 23. “She will obviously continue her super successful career in music, but she worked so hard on Cats and it would be awesome if she got recognized for it with an Academy Award,” our insider further explained. “Taylor is a planner and a dreamer and she certainly hopes to entertain her fans for a long time to come — but winning an Oscar would be the icing on the cake.”
