Casualty star Cathy Shipton reveals big Duffy and Charlie spoilers after shock cheating twist

Casualty star Cathy Shipton has revealed some big teasers about what’s next for Duffy and Charlie following that shock cheating twist tonight (October 27).

Duffy was guilt-ridden in Saturday’s scenes, after waking up in a hotel room with her childhood sweetheart Bill. Duffy’s big betrayal comes amid an already-difficult time for the nurse, as she’s struggling with her depression diagnosis and the breakdown of communication in her relationship with Charlie.

With so much going on, Digital Spy recently spoke to Cathy – who plays Duffy – to get the lowdown on the story and where it’s going next. Here are eight of the biggest teasers we got from our chat:

1. This is all connected to Duffy’s mental health story

While Duffy’s behaviour tonight might seem out of character, it’s actually all linked to a much wider issue. Casualty is currently exploring a big mental health story with Duffy, which is going to play out as part of a long-term story arc – in the same way that Dylan’s alcoholism has.

Cathy said to us: “This is part of a long and slowly played out story and is allied to a mental-health issue, behavioural changes.

“On the surface, it just looks like this is a couple who aren’t getting on very well, somebody else has come into her life and paid her more attention. That is what it looks like on the surface but there are actually other things going on. It even surprises Duffy. She knows that Bill was a mistake and she knows it was out of character. She doesn’t know what is going on and she tries to put Bill in his place, as he kind of stalks her.”

2. Duffy’s depression is going be explored further

Given that everything we saw tonight is all allied with Duffy’s mental health plot, it’ll come as no surprise that the story is going to be explored much further.

Cathy added: “Mental-health issues are often an accumulation of time and you can’t do that as a guest story. They have done it with the Dylan and Ciara story around alcoholism and the effect of that. They have explored it brilliantly with both of them as a man and a woman. You have just how much Ciara has been through because of bad choices and alcohol.

“They are also doing it with Iain’s character, showing the pressures of being a paramedic and the mistakes he made under pressure. Duffy’s story is the same and I am really proud that the show is exploring these issues seriously.”

3. Bill could pose a big threat

As viewers saw tonight, Bill didn’t take kindly to being rejected by Duffy following their night together – and, unsurprisingly, he could pose a worrying threat to her happiness with Charlie. Bill believes he’s a far more suitable match for Duffy than Charlie is, and something tells us that he won’t be letting this go anytime soon.

“Bill is more invested,” Cathy explained. “He is free, he is seeing more of a future for them and he didn’t take the night lightly. But she is shutting the door and saying no – she doesn’t let him down gently. It isn’t nice to be told that you’re a mistake. She’s really harsh.”

Explaining why Duffy turned to Bill in the first place, Cathy explained: “He turned up and saw her at her most vulnerable. She has known him since primary school and their lives were very interwoven for many years. They are at a pivotal, slightly anxious point, in both their lives and their shared past history feels like safe ground.”

4. Charlie will continue to feel suspicious

Aware she had some serious explaining to do after her all-nighter at the hotel, Duffy was forced to tell lie after lie in order to throw Charlie off tonight. Although Duffy hoped that she’d told her husband enough to appease his concern, Charlie remained unconvinced and decided to look through her phone.

Upcoming episodes will see Charlie continue to suspect all is not as it seems with Duffy, but will he discover what she’s been up to?

Cathy said: “Charlie can see that something isn’t right and, as we saw, he does do a bit of snooping. He has found that evidence on her phone and he knows what she said wasn’t true. He knows something isn’t right and tries to make an amends. He doesn’t think she’s cheated on him, but he knows that she hasn’t told him the truth.”

5. But he will remain in the dark for a while

Despite his suspicions, it looks like Charlie could be in the dark for a while longer – as Duffy is hoping to put the whole sorry situation to bed. Hmm, something tells us that ain’t going to happen!

Cathy said: “We saw in the episode that she thinks she’s put a lid on it. She doesn’t pull her punches with Bill and she closes that door. She had the chance to say something and didn’t take it. She thinks she should keep the guilt with her and not put it on Charlie. She wants to try and make things better. Neither of them talk to each other. “

6. There’s more to come from Bill’s own story too

Although Duffy’s desperately hoping that her adultery is dead and buried, Digital Spy can confirm that Bill’s troubles with his daughter will bring him back into the ED – and back into her life.

Cathy revealed: “Bill doesn’t intentionally make life difficult for her, but without giving too much away, his daughter is having health issues – as we’ve already seen. He is trying to get her life back on track and that has a bit of an effect, although I don’t want to say too much at the moment.

“I know the producers were very happy about the quality of Clive’s work and how those two gelled as characters. It is not all over yet.”

7. There could be light at the end of the tunnel for Chuffy

It’s the Million Dollar question: is this the end of Chuffy? Thankfully, it doesn’t look like it.

When we questioned Cathy on whether Duffy and Charlie can get through this, she said: “Yes. Where the other side will be is a guess, but I do know that eventually there will be some real heart to hearts and levelling out stuff.” Yay!

8. And Cathy wants them to stay together, too

It’s not just fans desperately hoping that Charlie and Duffy can resolve things, as Cathy is hopeful of a strong future for them too.

When Digital Spy asked Cathy if she hoped they can get through all this, she said without hesitance: “Undoubtedly. They are like an old Romeo and Juliet. But this is the history between Charlie and Duffy – they have missed so many opportunities over the years by not saying what they feel.”

Casualty continues on Saturday, November 3 on BBC One.
