Charlie (played by Derek Thompson) has been tracking down a very dark path after he lost the love of his life Duffy (Cathy Shipton) to dementia earlier this year on Casualty. The death of the beloved character sent shockwaves around the hospital and forged a rivalry between the BBC medical drama stalwart and his friend, Connie Beauchamp (Amanda Mealing). As the two went head-to-head, the charge nurse ended up quitting his role and turned to the bottle for comfort. Following the horrific events of the most recent episode the A&E-based soap, he decided to return full-time, but is this to topple the person running the ship and becoming head honcho himself?

Last year, Connie became addicted to prescription drugs after she was attacked and left fighting for her life by the husband of a cancer patient whose life she couldn’t save.

This drug-induced state led to a mix-up with the administration of medicine into the bloodstream of another critically-ill casualty as she forgot which needle had the correct dosage in.

As it was Duffy who was assisting her at the time, the head of the A&E department directed the blame at Charlie’s wife and played on the fact she had dementia.

However, it wasn’t long before her guilt ate her up and her friend learnt the truth about why his spouse was put in the firing zone.

Since then and especially following his other half’s death, the stalwart has never been able to give his colleague, so could he be planning revenge on his return to his role on the drama?

Struggling to work under Connie’s lead and finding himself constantly distracted by the memory of his late wife, Charlie ended up leaving his job quite dramatically earlier this year.

The first taste of action he got was when the stalwart was handing back his work belongings to the hospital in the last episode which aired back in May.

Unfortunately, he got caught up in a hostage situation and ended up bargaining with the gunman to let his colleagues, including the head of the A&E department, go free.

By the end of the tense instalment, the shooter was dead and reflecting on his own life, Duffy’s husband told the friend he had been feuding with he would return to his role.

Things need to change

Although they are not entirely on the same page yet, it seemed this was the turning of a new leaf in their journey together.

Thus, this is why the charge nurse making a shock U-turn and going against his colleague could ruin their relationship completely.

As he vies for blood, could Charlie, who has worked in the department for over three decades, take the top job from Connie?

Having worked hard and stepped on people’s toes to get the position she now holds, the fiery consultant could be prepared to battle her friend for the top spot.

Speaking to What’s On TV about the fallout from the siege, Charlie actor Derek, 71, teased a new direction for his character.

Of the hostage situation, the medical drama star said: “It shocks Charlie into thinking differently. He has to start relearning his world, and that means admitting things need to change.”

Will one of the things he needs to alter be ensuring he gets a promotion and highlights all of Connie’s faults?

On the beloved’s nurse’s downward spiral, the Casualty favourite added: “There’s still some semblance of the man we know, but his grief is pure white-hot anger.”

“We’re breaking all the Charlie rules. It’s very tiring playing busted Charlie!” he continued and with the charge nurse not one to cause a ruckus, going after Connie’s job would certainly be a break from the norm.

However, it could be the head of the A&E department who causes her own downfall by admitting what she did to Duffy all those months ago.

In light of the last episode which aired, one fan wrote on Twitter: “Awwww Charlie just broke my heart talking about Duffy and them all letting her down. Connie’s face. I hope she owns up after this #Casualty.”

“Charlie and Connie starting to repair their friendship… warmed my heart #casualty I have missed them,” another added.

Casualty continues tonight at 8:25pm on BBC One.
