Casualty may not necessarily pull out all the stops for Christmas like the other shows do, but that doesn’t mean the drama will be slowing down over the coming weeks.
With the festive season about to get under way, there’s shocks, surprises and heartbreak aplenty as our ED lot gear up for their busiest time of the year. But while some are embracing the holiday spirit, it’s going to be a very lonely Christmas for others. Here are the biggest stories hitting your screens over the coming weeks:
1. Duffy and Charlie’s marriage is on the line
She’ll break your heart in tomorrow night’s episode, but sadly, there’s a lot more anguish on the way for Duffy afterwards. As promised, her story is far from over and Duffy will be taking centre stage in next week’s episode as well when the truth about her infidelity threatens to turn her world upside down.
Duffy has spent the last few weeks struggling with the guilt of her out-of-character betrayal, which saw her spend the night with childhood sweetheart Bill earlier in the autumn. When Bill pays another visit visit to the ED after suffering from chest pains, the truth threatens to reveal itself – but can Duffy stop the inevitable happening? Or are her and Charlie heading for a very bleak Christmas?
Well, put it this way, Cathy Shipton wasn’t wrong when she said we’d be needing the tissues…
2. And Duffy hides her dementia secret
In an even sadder turn of events, Bill’s unwelcome arrival at the hospital forces Duffy to keep her health fears to herself. Tonight’s scenes will see Duffy self-diagnose herself with dementia, following a worrying fall at home, but when she starts to connect the dots of her symptoms, she comes to a devastating conclusion.
Unfortunately, Duffy decides not to confide in Charlie over her dementia concerns afterwards and she’s still hiding the secret as the show heads towards Christmas. Will Charlie find out what’s going on with his wife? Is Duffy determine to carry her secret alone for as long as possible?
3. Iain’s big mistake
Iain’s life has been spiralling out of control since the summer, but his unrelenting nightmare is about to intensify in coming episodes. Still waiting to get professional help, the paramedic’s attempts at using work as a distraction backfire drastically when he makes an ill-advised pass at his colleague Ruby.
As he throws himself into work, Iain starts to thaw towards Ruby– grateful for her unwavering support in spite of the way he’s treated her. But when Iain misreads the signs at the end of the tough day and kisses her, it looks like their friendship could be over before it’s even began.
Although a mortified Ruby is keen to put the mishap behind them, Iain is plunged into his darkest place yet in the aftermath, and sadly, we’ve got a feeling the worst is still yet to come.
4. Marty’s lies get out of hand
Don’t get us wrong, we are loving the show’s newest nurse Marty, but his dating tactics definitely leave a lot to be desired. The cheeky chappy has been a breath of fresh air since joining the ED, and he’s certainly got potential where the job is concerned, but he’s about to dive headfirst into a non-medical mess amid his attempts at wooing dishy doctor Joshua.
Spotting an opportunity to get closer to Joshua, Marty will continue to pretend that Robyn Miller’s baby daughter Charlotte is his own, but as he gets tangled in his web of lies, how long can he keep the game up for? And how will Robyn and Joshua react when they find out what he’s been up to?
5. A lonely Christmas for Dylan
Christmas has never been the most wonderful time of the year for Dylan (in fact, it’s been far from it) and this year will be no exception. The perpetually unlucky doctor is heading for another bleak winter after his heart broken was broken all over again last week, when on-off love interest Ciara left Holby without him.
Fed up with Dylan’s Scrooge-like approach to the festive season, his ever-positive pal David will try and convince him to embrace the holiday spirit. But when a postcard of pain arrives on Dylan’s doorstep on Christmas Eve, it looks like David could be fighting a losing battle. Is Dylan in for another lonely Christmas?
6. More problems for Alicia and Ethan
They’ve been through hell and back over the last few years, so it’s no surprise that Ethan and Alicia are struggling to fall back into their old rhythm since reuniting. But as Alicia and Ethan continue to try and find their feet as a couple, they are thrown another challenge when they disagree over a medical case.
With Alicia learning to trust her instincts, she ultimately overrules Ethan – her medical senior – when she’s adamant that there is more to a patient’s case than meets the eye. How will Ethan respond to Alicia’s new-found professional confidence? And can they make their relationship work, or is it simply just not meant to be?
7. Jan’s mysterious secret
No-nonsense paramedic Jan might seem a tough cookie, but she could be about to crumble under the pressure of a big secret. Upcoming scenes will see Jan struggle to cope as she’s plagued with a number of mystery calls and later reluctantly pays someone a sum of money over the phone. But what is going on? And is Jan in trouble?
