Captain America’s (Chris Evans) journey may have come to a fitting conclusion in Avengers: Endgame, but there are still many unanswered questions surrounding his storyline. Cap’s decision to remain in the past, for instance, has ignited speculation that there are now alternate realities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While fans will continue to debate the consequences of Captain America’s decision, Endgame writers recently revealed that his fate was deliberately left a mystery.
‘Endgame’ writers dish on Cap’s ending
In the final scenes of Endgame, Captain America was sent back in time to put all of the Infinity Stones in their rightful places. The task was meant to stop the creation of multiple realities, which could lead to major issues down the road.
But after finishing his mission, Steve stayed in the past sothat he could live the life he always wanted with Peggy Carter. The move was asweet conclusion to Cap’s story and was a heartfelt way to send him off.
According to We Got This Covered, it also opened thedoor for potential alternate realities, not to mention a slew of questionsabout Cap’s life with Peggy.
For Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the questions surrounding Captain America’s ending were purposefully left unanswered so that fans would keep thinking about all of the possibilities.
“Those are unsatisfied questions. Those are intrigued questions.I’m delighted at people still chewing over this thing. You know, if it’s‘That’s stupid and I don’t like it and I’m talking about it because it wasdumb’, that’s one thing. But if it’s, ‘I honestly don’t know, and it’s kind ofcool to think about’, that’s great.”
What really happened to Captain America?
Fans have been debating what happened to Captain America ever sinceEndgame hit theaters earlier this year. Some fans believe that hecreated an alternate reality while others think that staying in the past closedCap’s time loop.
There is no way to know for sure what happened to Cap unlessMarvel releases a new movie that explores that storyline. But for Markus, hepreviously stated that Cap did not make another reality when he left theAvengers in the future.
Markus understood that Captain America simply lived out the rest of his days in the past and did not diverge from the main timeline. He also believes that Cap has always been Peggy’s husband, so staying in the past did not alter her timeline either.
Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have debated thistheory and offered their own version of events. For them, Captain America didcreate an alternate reality when he stayed in the past, though it is not clearif that will ever be dealt with in the MCU.
Fans disagree with Captain America’s ending
Fans have also expressed their thoughts on Cap’s storyline in Endgame.Some fans believe that having the character remain in the past and get the lifehe has always wanted was something he deserved.
Others disagree. Some viewers argue that Captain America was way more invested in his friends in modern times, like Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and Sam (Anthony Mackie), and that leaving them behind is something Cap would never do.
Fans will likely debate this for years to come, though Markuspointed out that Cap’s somewhat selfish decision in Endgame is areflection of how much his character has grown since the first movie.
This is why Cap lived and Iron Man died
Captain America and Iron Man (Robert Downy Jr.) were two of themain characters in the MCU — and both of their storylines reached a fittingconclusion in Endgame.
While Cap got to spend the rest of his days with the woman he loved, Tony Stark sacrificed himself to save the entire universe. To Markus’ previous point, their endings were a complete reversal of how their journeys began, which is why Iron Man had to die in Endgame while Cap chose to live.
“We realized over the course of the movies, that Cap andTony were on crossing arcs,” McFeely explained. “We realized at onepoint, late in 2015, that for Steve to be his best self, he was going to haveto get a life and for Tony to be his best self, he might have to losehis.”
Fans may disagree on how Captain America’s story ended, butthere is no denying that Marvel did an amazing job developing the character inthe last few movies. And given all of the mystery surrounding his journey,there is always a possibility that Cap could return for one last adventure.
After all, who doesn’t want to find out what Captain America wasup to all those years in the past?
In the meantime, Marvel is gearing up for the start of Phase 4 of the MCU, which starts with Black Widow this May, followed by The Eternals in November.
