British Soap Awards 2019: Viewers shocked at Hollyoaks win after Emmerdale snub

Hollyoaks was crowned this year’s Best British Soap by the public at the British Soap Awards 2019, but fans watching at home were shocked by the triumph. 

Coronation Street, EastEnders, Doctors and Emmerdale were also nominated for the highly coveted award, and some viewers felt the award should have gone to the residents of the Dales instead. 

Explaining who they thought would have been a more deserving winner, one viewer tweeted: “Emmerdale should’ve won that idc #SoapAwards.” 

Another fan wrote: “Really?? @SoapAwards was gonna say Emmerdale deserved that,” and a third added: “Emmerdale you woz robbed #yorkshireyorkshire #soapawards.” 

“Robbed Robbed Robbed. #Emmerdale had much better storylines throughout the year. Think you need to recount them votes #SoapAwards,” said a fourth. 

However other viewers were pleased with the chosen winner as one fan exclaimed: “I’M IN SHOCK OH MY GOD #SOAPAWARDS.” 

“They actually did it.. so proud of hollyoaks #SoapAwards,” tweeted another and a third wrote: “#SoapAwards I’m so happy hollyoaks won, my fave soap by far with the best cast!!!” 

A fourth remarked: “Absolutely buzzing that #Hollyoaks won best British soap at the #SoapAwards.” 

As well as taking home the Best British Soap Award, the Hollyoaks cast picked up a number of other awards too. 

Gregory Finnegan who plays James Nightingale in the soap was awarded Best Actor and Nathan Sussex who plays Buster Smith won Villain of the Year.
