Bone-chilling horror movies you won't want to miss

Like it or not, horror has been absolutely thriving over the past year or so.

With Jordan Peele leaving us pretty distressed for days afterwards, Stephen King adaptations still going strong and sequels and reboots galore, it’s a great time for those who love a spot of fear in their lives.

And, with plenty of bone-chilling flicks that will leave you scared out of your wits and leaving the light on while you sleep, here are a few you won’t want to miss.

Just don’t watch them alone, yeah?

Eerie

While the Filipino Gothic movie was released in March, it recently landed on Netflix and has been terrifying viewers no end.

Centring around a tale of a girls’ school the nuns aren’t the creepy thing about it…for once, as we suddenly discover a character named Erika (Gillian Vicencio), who basically haunts all from beyond the ether.

Set in Lucia Academy for girls we see guidance counsellor Pat Consolacion (Bea Alonzo) attempt to uncover what went down behind the news of a student’s gruesome suicide. Old mate Erika.

Since it was dropped onto Netflix, fans have been taking to social media to point out just how freaky the whole thing is.

It: Chapter 2

Because no horror list would be complete without the King himself, right?

Set for release in September 2019, the sequel to the horrifying clown flick, which made us all stay away from balloons for a good few months, looks just as creepy.

While the kids took on Pennywise the clown in the first movie, the second sees the adults return to Derry to see their old foe.

James McAvoy, Bill Hader, and Jessica Chastain are set to star, with Bill Skarsgård returning as Pennywise to haunt your dreams yet again and assure everyone that yes, ‘You’ll float too.’

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Upping the creepiness level by a mile, the upcoming flick helmed by André Øvredal is set to be based on Alvin Schwartz’s children’s book series.

It follows young Sarah Bellows (Kathleen Pollard) who turns her troubled life into a series of scary stories. However, when a bunch of teenagers stumble upon the woman’s house, things get all too real as the tales start coming to life.

Zoe Margaret Colletti, Austin Abrams, and Gabriel Rush are set to star in the movie, with Breaking Bad’s Dean Norris also featuring.

Set for release on 23 August, we don’t think we’re prepared.

Little Monsters

For a side of comic relief with your horror, look no further than the Australian flick starring Lupita Nyong’o and helmed by Abe Forsythe.

It follows a dead-beat (Alexander England) who, after splitting up with his girlfriend, falls for his nephew’s kindergarten teacher (Nyong’o).

However, when the pair take the class on a field trip, they come across an unexpected zombie apocalypse. Classic.

With the movie being released in November 2019, it looks set to provide some much-needed laughs among all the horror.

Crawl

We’ve had ghosts, zombies and clowns – it’s high time for some alligators.

Directed by Alexandre Aja, the terrifying movie sees a young woman fighting to save her father amid a hurricane, before she gets trapped in a house with some hungry alligators.

All in all, not ideal.

Kaya Scodelario will star alongside Barry Pepper and Morfydd Clark, with the movie being released on 23 August.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged

Sharks, sharks, and more sharks.

While it seems unlikely that any shark movies are going to live up to Jaws, it seems many are willing to give it a shot, with the  47 Meters Down sequel set for release on 16 August.

And you definitely can’t blame the tried and tested formula as the movie follows four teen girls who, while, diving, realise they’ve entered the territory of a deadly shark species.

What are the chances?!

A Quiet Place 2

Perhaps the most anticipated sequel of the lot, details for John Krasinski’s movie are actually quite scarce.

It definitely looks to be happening, although fans will have to wait until May 2020.

Chatting to Entertainment Weekly about the sequel, John explained: ‘This is a world you can play in, this isn’t just a character to remake… It’s actually a world, which is a whole different, very unique experience.’

Yeah, it was all suitably vague. Still, we can’t wait!

The Conjuring 3

Set for release in September 2020, the plot is currently being kept under wraps.

However, it’s been confirmed it’ll be based on another of the Warrens’ real life cases.

Ready Or Not

A game of hide and seek in a creepy mansion – what could go wrong?

The upcoming film, which will be released on 27 September this year, sees a newlywed bride (Samara Weaving) fleeing from her terrifying in-laws.

Starring Adam Brody and Andie MacDowell and directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, it looks all kinds of creepy.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

While the specific plot is also being kept under wraps, it will follow a group of kids whose scary stories come to life.

However, with a release date of 4 October 2019, bosses have promised that it’ll be a family-friendly flick, with Dauberman telling Slash Film: ‘I think it is scary and I think kids will be scared watching it at times, and also they’ll laugh at times.’
