Bodyguard writer gives big hint there will be a second season of hit drama

The nation hast been hooked on the relationship between protection officer David Budd (Richard Madden) and Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) across three action-packed episodes so far, with more than 7million tuning in.

Now that success looks like it might translate into another series, with Mercurio telling the Mirror: "I have got some ideas for a second series, but it is worth waiting until the run is finished to see which bits worked and which bits didn't work for the audience."

There's still plenty of drama left in the current series, however.

"I have put in some red herrings, you have to be able to have a number of possible answers in play and that is all about what you let the audience in on and what you keep from them," teased Mercurio.

The BBC has revealed it will extend the concluding episode by 15 minutes, to make sure the high-octane drama delivers a suitably sensational finale.

It means the corporation now has to rearrange the Sunday night schedules to accommodate the expanded show.

That includes moving the Ten O’Clock News from its usual starting time.

A TV insider said: “Giving an episode of any drama series more than a 60-minute slot is a rare event on the BBC, so this proves just how much they value Bodyguard.

“Viewers are unlikely to complain, given that the audience response tends to be that they’ve usually been left wanting more every time.

“This should ensure that Bodyguard’s climax is unforgettable, particularly as the tension has been continually rising over the last three episodes.”

In Sunday’s episode we saw Home Secretary Julia Montague, played by Keeley Hawes, nearly killed when a bomb exploded as she gave a speech to a packed hall.

That was despite the best efforts of her bodyguard Sergeant David Budd, played by Richard Madden, who raced to protect her from the blast.

The explosion came just a week after Julia had been the target of a bloody assassination attempt as she travelled in her ministerial car.
