Bodyguard viewers gripped by BBC's "intense" new thriller

BBC’s new thriller Bodyguard aired its first episode of the series tonight (August 26), and it’s safe to say it had the nation well and truly gripped.

From Line of Duty writer Jed Mercurio, Bodyguard gets off to an incredibly tense start, with an opening sequence that sees protagonist David Budd (Game of Thrones‘ Richard Manning) talk down a bomber on a speeding train.

The scene lasted 20 minutes, a whole third of the episode’s runtime, but it was so intense that viewers barely even noticed.

The rest of the episode is no less gripping. Eventually, we see Madden’s Budd, a war-veteran-turned-Specialist-Protection-Officer, assigned to powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) as her bodyguard.

The premiere certainly went down well with viewers, silencing anyone who thought Mercurio wouldn’t be able to replicate the success of Line of Duty.

One fan wrote: “Ok. #Bodyguard on @BBCOne was fantastic. So gripping! Even though it’s a fictional show and storyline, it really does make you appreciate those officers who put themselves on the line in the event of a terrorist attack. Totally relevant to today’s society.”

And after just one episode, there are already so many questions. With Budd suffering from PTSD from a military campaign that Montague voted for, could he actually be tempted to kill the woman he’s meant to be protecting. We address that theory and various others here.

The next episode of Bodyguard airs tomorrow on BBC One at 9pm.
