Bodyguard leaves viewers with 10 huge questions still unanswered

However, in its first three episodes, the hit BBC show, created by Jed Mercurio, has left baffled fans asking these ten questions.

1. What did David see in the suitcase when he asked aide Tahir Mahmood to open it?

Towards the end of episode three, Julia's aide Tahir Mahmood was seen acting suspiciously and carrying a silver suitcase which initially appeared to contain notes for her speech.

Viewers saw David ask to look inside it, however they weren't shown what he could see, and he maintained a blank expression before letting the assistant go.

However, just before the explosion went off, injuring Julia, viewers saw the outline of a figure with a suitcase containing the bomb.

This has led fans to suggest that PC Budd may have been in on the attack.

2. Why did David's fellow police officer have a huge stain on her shirt?

As David escorted Julia into a building where she was to do her speech, his fellow police officer sported a very obvious yellow stain on her shirt.

Viewers were confused about where it had come from, but an egg thrown by a group of protesters narrowly missed the the Home Secretary revealed what must have happened to her.

3. Why was Julia covered in so much blood during the sniper attack when she was sat in the back seat of the armoured car?

In one of the most dramatic scenes of the series so far, the Home Secretary was sprayed in blood when her driver was shot by a sniper.

Despite being in the back seat of an armoured car, fans questioned why she seemed to have so much covering her.

4. Why do we not know who David's ex Vicky's new boyfriend is?

David's estranged wife Vicky revealed she has "met someone" in episode one.

Viewers have suggested that the new boyfriend could be key to the plot.

5. Why have MI5 and the Metropolitan Police not noticed that David and Julia are sleeping together and that he has PTSD?

From the start of the show David was presented as troubled, and likely to be suffering from PTSD as well as alcoholism from his Army days.

Together with the fact he is sleeping with his boss, who is being closely watched by the police and MI5, fans have asked why both organisations seem to be so in the dark about the policeman.

6. What was on Julia's secret tablet and what document did David find?

In episode three the Home Secretary was seen being given a secret tablet containing a self-destructing document that could only be accessed with a password.

It was left unclear who it was about, but the person it referred to had "alcohol dependence" as well as a number of other issues.

Later while Julia slept, David was seen going through the tablet – however, it was still not revealed who it was referring to.

Interestingly, he didn't tell his police boss what it contained either, leading fans to speculate it is about him.

7. Is David serious about a romance with Julia?

Romance between the bodyguard and politician seems to have blossomed rather quickly.

But fans have questioned whether both each have ulterior motives – particularly PC Budd.

8. Does Julia survive the bombing?

Viewers were left unsure at the end of Sunday's episode whether Julia makes a full recovery after the bombing.

Some viewers suggested she might not make it since creator Jed Mercurio has a habit of killing off leads.

9. Why was David seen whispering through a door that he previously needed spy equipment to hear through?

Viewers had watched the security officer PC David Budd (Richard Madden) use specialist spy equipment to eavesdrop through a thick wooden door on Julia Montague, the Home Secretary (Keeley Hawes) in the show's second episode.

But on Sunday night those watching at home were amazed to see him comfortably whispering through the same door to Julia after he almost strangled her.

10. Why does David suddenly appear to have swapped his grey shirt to a white one without explanation?

In the show's first episode the police officer was seen meeting his new boss for the first time in a grey shirt.

But just seconds later he appeared on duty in her office wearing a white one – and viewers complained about the rather obvious continuity issue.
