Bodyguard fans furious writer Jed Mercurio hinted Julia Montague was still alive before explosive final show

A peak audience of 11million watched as David Budd narrowly avoided death after being strapped into an explosive vest by deadly criminal Luke Aitken and his cronies.

It was revealed the gang was behind the assassination of the Home Secretary, desperate to thwart her RIPA 18 security reforms.

While Budd drove into the sunset with his estranged wife Vicky and their kids with the case neatly tied up, viewers turned their aired their disappointment at no Julia.

Writing on Twitter, they said: "the greatest disappointment of my life has to be that Julia Montague didn’t come back in #Bodyguard.

"Honestly truly believe julia montague is still alive. They left it all far too open for her to just be RIP #Bodyguard.

"Shocked and upset that Julia Montague is actually dead.

"A great 6 episodes but so disappointed with the last 5 minutes. When the Prime Minister was due to speak the door to No.10 should have opened and Julia step out. Amazing acting by Richard Madden. Shame the character of Julia Montague was created for 3 episodes. Missed opportunity

"Wow that was tense final episode but kinda disappointed julia montague didn’t turn up alive #bodyguard.

"Yes, and the wrong person survived obvs. I don’t respect the tease of ‘Julia Montague’ and all that Romeo stuff. It feels far too geared to Twitter, which doesn’t make good, thought through drama."

In an exclusive chat with The Sun prior to the finale, Jed Mercurio admitted he enjoyed telling porkies to ramp up the interest in the show.

He said: “The thing is, I don’t really feel a great responsibility to tell the truth, so it doesn’t really matter what I say.

“I tell the truth where it’s the ethical thing to do, but in terms of entertainment there’s a certain fun and a certain enjoyment that can be added to the experience by a few judicious lies.”

In the build up to the much-anticipated finale he dropped a big hint that Julia Montague was still alive.

The writer admitted there was a "grain of truth" in all the speculation about what really happened to the Home Secretary.

Bodyguard fans were left devastated when Home Secretary Julia Montague, played by Keeley Hawes, died in a bomb explosion in episode four of the hit BBC drama.

For the first 15 minutes of the show, viewers had no idea if Julia had survived the blast, but eventually, it was revealed she had succumbed to her injuries.

There was wild speculation about what really happened to her – and Jed hinted the theories about her being alive could be right.

During an appearance on This Morning, he was asked about the alive theories and he said: "We are all sitting back and enjoying the speculation.

"It's great they have theories. Actually I do look at some of bigger theories and occasionally there's a grain of truth.

"It's not like we are standing by going hotter – colder."
