'Blade Runner' Is Getting an Animated Reboot Set In 2032

It was announced in November 2018 that sci-fi cult classic Blade Runner will be getting remade for the small screen. And the series promises to be an animated spectacle inspired by Blade Runner 2049. Here’s what we know about the series so far.

This isn’t the first time ‘Blade Runner’ has been animated

In fact, the Blade Runner world has been given the anime treatment a few times since the original movie hit the silver screen in 1982. There were three short films made that served as prequels to the Blade Runner 2049 installment that brought Harrison Ford’s character Rick Deckard back to the big screen.

Blade Runner Black Out 2022,  2036: Nexus Dawn, and 2048: Nowhere to Run all take place between the events of the two feature films. The second two films set the scene for the second film and were released just five weeks before the movie was released in theaters. Shinichiro Watanabe, who wrote and directed the first short film, will serve as creative producer for the upcoming animated series.

What characters will be featured in the animated series?

Series directors Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama have kept details well under wraps since announcing Alcon Television Group and Adult Swim had teamed up to produce and distribute the 13-episode series. It is known, however, that the series, titled Blade Runner-Black Lotus, will be set in 2032. It has been confirmed that established characters from the movies will be part of the animated series, although it isn’t readily clear which characters will make an appearance.
