Bob Odenkirk got the rumor mill spinning last year when he posted a cryptic photo online with his Better Call Saul co-star Patrick Fabian. It was meant to be a fun birthday shoutout, but the post took a life of its own as fans noticed Fabian had what appeared to be blood in his hair. Some were convinced it was a sign of Howard Hamlin’s death, others felt the picture couldn’t have had any significance if Odenkirk shared it. But as it turns out, it was an accidental spoiler.
Bob Odenkirk accidentally spoiled Howard’s death in ‘Better Call Saul’
Odenkirk shared the photo on Twitter in December. “Happy birthday pally!” he captioned the image, which showed Odenkirk taking a selfie with Fabian on set. Fabian could be seen with a small patch of something red in his hair and dressed in a Howard-esque suit.
This happens to be from the scene of his character Howard’s death, which came in the latest episode of Better Call Saul. Howard was at Saul Goodman (Odenkirk) and Kim Wexler’s (Rhea Seehorn) home to confront them about the Sandpiper Crossing scam when Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) walked in. A terrified Kim tried to tell Howard he needed to leave, but before he could do anything, Lalo shot and killed him.

After watching the episode, one fan who remembered Odenkirk’s photo was eager to find out if he shared it “to mess with us.” The actor wrote back saying it was an error and completely unintentional. “Well the truth can be told. I screwed up,” he said. “I did not know you could see a little bit of makeup that told story… my bad.”
Luckily, the episode still managed to surprise viewers.
“I was so shocked at last night’s episode,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “I’m glad it slipped from my mind so easily. Feel bad for Bob for the mistake.”
“Yeah. I just checked the tweet and I had apparently liked it, but I have no memory of that whatsoever,” one person replied.
Another fan thought it was smart that Odenkirk left the photo up. “By leaving it up they were able to at least make people doubt its significance,” they wrote in part. “Genius. Definitely the best way they could have handled it.”
Howard’s death will shape the final episodes of ‘Better Call Saul’
As far as what to expect next, series co-creator Peter Gould teased that what happened to Howard will linger over the remaining episodes of Better Call Saul Season 6.
“That’s the story of the rest of the series: What do they take away from this horrible incident that happened right in their living room?” he told Vanity Fair. “That really propels everything that happens next — and I could not be prouder of what happens next. I think it’s very human and real, but I think, to me anyway, it’s very unpredictable.”
