Ben Shephard cuts off GMB guest as Coronation row breaks out

Ben Shephard intervenes during debate on coronation protests

Activist Peter Tatchell joined Good Morning Britain on Thursday to advocate for the right to demonstrate against King Charles III’s upcoming Coronation.

Meanwhile, Christine Hamilton sat on the other side of the debate to argue protestors shouldn’t distract from proceedings on May 6.

The ITV guests got into a somewhat heated debate, and while hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway oversaw the row, they also had to intervene to stop the argument.

It came as Peter questioned the concept of the monarchy, which Christine disagreed with and wanted to make sure her voice was heard.

Christine carried on with her argument despite Ben stating time had run out, and he was forced to repeat himself.

The two presented different opinions on the monarchy and at times the debate was heated.

“Because you can get a very bad person [as monarch] and the principle of a monarchy is the most moral, stupid first in line to the throne is better than the wisest, most moral commoner,” Peter fumed.

He added: “I think that’s a bad principle for a head of state, and head of state is separate from the monarchy.

“You can keep the king, but the head of state should be [voted] by the people.”

“Right, sadly we’re going to have to leave it there…” Ben replied.

“Would you rather have a flag?” Christine interrupted. “Would you rather have Tony Blair? I mean who would you want?”

“I did say we’re going to have to leave it there,” Ben repeated as Christine prepared to keep rowing.

“Leaving it there, OK,” she eventually remarked.

“Not least for the tidy up of the desk, you’ve made a right mess!” Ben jokingly lectured.

Christine had knocked over a glass of water while arguing an earlier point, and she apologised once again.

Many responded to the argument, with some fans agreeing with Christine and others backing Peter’s points.

Good Morning Britan airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
